May 1, 2006 - What if there was a way to stop mental illness before it ever

developed? Psychiatric researchers have been experimenting with such an idea

by prescribing drugs to young people at risk of schizophrenia who have not

had the full blown disorder.

The first long-term trial of this controversial treatment is yielding mixed

results. A report in the American Journal of Psychiatry finds the drug

Zyprexa lowered the risk of psychotic episodes. But, it also caused

significant weight gain, and many in the study dropped out.

The research was funded by Eli Lilly, the maker of Zyprexa, and the National

Insitute of Mental Health.
