Psychiatric researchers have been experimenting with such an idea by prescribing drugs to young people at risk of schizophrenia who have not had the full blown disorder. The first long-term trial of this controversial treatment is yielding mixed results. A report in the American Journal of Psychiatry finds the drug Zyprexa lowered the risk of psychotic episodes. But, it also caused significant weight gain, and many in the study dropped out.
