Guest guest
: Congrats on the new job! You should do well. Just be forthright with your employers about your accommodation needs; pace yourself at work as not to stress your body; and have fun on your new adventure! Take it from an " Ancient SMAer " on a vent who has 2 jobs outside of her home, you will not fail. Vicki **************Finally, one site has it all: your friends, your email, your favorite sites. Guest guest
Thanks Vicki, Much of my worries are just of the unknown - as the most ive ever worked was a 30hr work week, but then again I was also going to school full time too so it was a longer weekly event (2 yrs ago). My employer has so far been very open about asking what my needs are, and IVe been open as well, but I havent even seen my work-space other than the big general office, so a lot I just don't know. I did talk to my staff tonight and have to my supervisor as well. Thankfully I am blessed to have my staff available to help me figure out any little glitches until I'm settled - even if it means being around (not by my side) while I'm at work all day... at this point, its the only thing we can come up with for the commute is for them to drive me to work, and then I give them some errands to do, and they have their own college homework also, and then drive me home at the end of the work day - seems so unpractical but I really need this job experience and a taxi ride home is just WAY outta budget even with IRWE's. I will probably live at home for the next yr or so to pay off my bills - and settle into this - as I just cannot afford moving now - this gives me thankfully more flex with my PCA's.... once I'm able to move closer to a job, it will be much easier, but I'm pretty grateful to have this as an experience, even if it will take some figuring out of how to best make it work! Of course I have the concerns of " what about when I get sick " and the sort - as usually I'm out 2 weeks, but my employer seems flexible, and if not and I think my health will suffer greatly than at least I gave it a good try! 9 days of " Vacation " left! > > : > > Congrats on the new job! Guest guest
When I first started working in 1990 the bathroom and transportation were my biggest concerns as well. As you may remember, I have managed to wait until I get home to use the restroom (I know-not good) and now and then comes to help me if needed. As far as transportation, the first several years I took para-transit to and from work which was very exhausting. Now I take MetroLift to work and picks me up to take me home. As far as working 40+ hours a week, it was much easier when I was younger. Of course, over the years (18 to be exact-same employer) I have lost much of my strength and each work day is a struggle but somehow I get through the day. The best part of the day is when drives up and I see his smile. It gives me strength and hope that I can keep going. Guest guest
, Congrats!! I am so happy for you--sounds like a cool job, too! ~a From: <laurenmarie791@...> Subject: Happy Thanksgiving Everybody in the States! (a little late!) Date: Friday, November 28, 2008, 3:07 PM Hello Everybodoy, Hope those in the states here had a wonderful thanksgiving. We had a very low-key holiday with just a few family members but enough food for 5 times that many people! I have some good news I wanted to share with you guys... After 2.5 years of searching for a full time job after getting my masters in social work, who woulda guessed in the not-so-great American economy that I'd get HIRED!!! YAY! I will be working for part of our welfare to work program doing " Holistic therapy " with a really unique division in the program that offers counseling along with nutrition counseling, exercise classes, yoga, and acupuncture --all offered by venders who come on site... I will be working my first full time job (Have done 30hrs per week before, this will be 45!) and am very nervous. I have 3 great attendants who are gonna help me as much as possible, but the hardest part is the commute - it is 1/2 hour from home and the hadicab service does not go that route!...the bus does but that is a 1.5 hr trip each way with transfers. My staff can thankfully drop me off and even come some days for a bathroom break...but i cannot afford the wear/tear on my van to have somebody come back all those miles to pick me up (Essentially making it 2 round trips a day). I'm considering using a taxi to get home and using it as a Impairement Related Work Expense. I also have an ad out for somebody who already commutes to that area to carpool - if they drive my car, I will give them free gas for the favor (and no wear/tear on their car!) - I think a great deal, but nobody interested yet. Needless to say, the best bet is living closer, but because of my debt, I cannot afford to move out of my parents home for about a year with my bills that need to be paid off. I'm freaking out, to say the least. I have this wonderful opportunity but am scared that I cant figure out the transportation and wont be able to do it! Any advice? I also have the fear of what to expect the first day and CAn i really do this, can my body handle it... I worked so hard to get here, and dont wanna " fail " (in my eyes) Wishing you all a wonderful weekend, and advice would be so appreciated!
