In our discussion on Chlorella, I mentioned that other forms of Blue

Green Algae have been shown to produce toxins but mentioned that

Spirulina and Chlorella at least seem to be toxic free.

This study came out recently and questions the safety of Spirulina

Phytomedicine. 2008 Jun;15(6-7):525-7. Epub 2008 Apr 22.

Acute rhabdomyolysis caused by Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis).

Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially life-threatening disorder that occurs as

a primary disease or as a complication of a broad spectrum of other

diseases. We report the first case of acute rhabdomyolysis after

ingestion of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis), a plantonic blue-green

alga, as a dietary supplement.
