Guest guest
Hahah this is incredible, and so true. - From: Amy <charmedcripchic@...> Subject: Most Wonderful Time Of Year- My Ass Date: Sunday, November 30, 2008, 8:05 PM I think too many of us can relate with each other that getting into the holiday spirit is no easy task to do. Many of us are trying their best to make their own holiday traditions and find something meaningful during the holiday season to replace the unrealistic Norman Rockwell commercial holiday fallicies, but that advice is easier said than done. There's always PCAs letting us down at the last momment. Or worse bringing their own problems to work. Maybe even showing up drunk from their own party curcuit. For many of us our care routines go by the wayside during holidays so many of us feel less than festive while we wait days for a shower, hair wash, guys get three day beards {that went out of fashion with Don around 1991}. You don't want to be photographed for the family albums while you don't look and feel your best. You don't want to eat a big holiday meal if you're haven't been able to do bowel care routines, you don't want to drink much if you're not going to be somewhere with help or access to pee. Then there's other hassles like family who bitch about you bringing a service dog with you. Don't understand why you don't want to risk getting hurt while being hauled up a flight of stairs because aunt effie insisted on her house for the family gathering. Family members set reservations at a location then fail to let you know it's not wheelchair accessible. Serving only foods you can't eat. Imposing on us with their smoking habits or overbearing bratty toddlers who hijack our wheelchairs and maul us into injuries and broken medical equipment. Or all the family coming to your place and trashing your home, consuming everything your monthly food budget or vouchers allowed for, then run off and leave you with all of the mess to clean up. Outside of the family mine field there's germ warfare to deal with as well. Participating in holiday death marches to shop, visit, observe, and worship, by a set deadline, often fatigue us and put us into crowded situations where we're exposed to flu viruses that can hospitalize us or endanger our lives. Holiday devotees just have to give you a hug while they're having 'just a little cold' that's in it's highest contagious phase. Hmmmm when will the Lifetime and Hallmark channels have any 'heartwarming' specials that reflect our holiday momments? ======originally posted at my own you group called independent living ===========

Guest guest
Excellent points. I honestly do not understand why people accept this poor behavior from others. It is so hard to say " Thank you anyway but <yada yada insert something here...we have other plans>. " Ohhh, what will they think of me? I doubt they could think any less of you (based on the comments you all have shared here). If it sounds like I have issues, I think I have less issues than those who continue to subject themselves to these holiday abuses. I say screw them. Happy Holidays! Guest guest
Yeah I agree. I only do what I WANT to do for holidays and people deal with it. :-) On 12/1/08 6:35 PM, " Lori " <lorig713@...> wrote: > > > > Excellent points. Guest guest
I also LOOOOOOVE the winter holiday season! I have a lot of fun decorating my home, baking treats for my hubby and friends, and having a great excuse to be singing all the time! Truly, I believe that how you react to situations around you can completely change your life. Attitude can change even the worst event into something amazing if you want to seek it and allow yourself to take control. It's been said in many ways, but I like this quote by Bertha Calloway best: " We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.
