Guest guest
In one of my presentations, i show a slide that shows what people in American are eating based on what is ordered in restaurants. According to the slide I show, which is based on data obtained in 2005, the 3 most common meals American eat are... 1. Hamburger 2. French fries 3. Pizza Most people find these results very surprising and inaccurate. Yet, once again, we see they are fairly accurate. The following story appeared on CBS Sunday Morning today. You can read the full story at this link, but I am highlighting the relevant information here. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/11/23/sunday/main4628085.shtml The Changing Ways America Eats, And Where Nov. 23, 2008 CBS Sunday Morning The most popular meals in the U.S.: Burgers, french fries, pizza and sandwiches. Harry Balzer knows how you eat. His company, the Chicago-based NPD Group, studies the culinary habits of thousands of Americans every day. " My job for the last 30 years has been to watch how Americans eat, " Balzer told Doane. " Not what they say they do, but to watch their actual behavior. " And regardless of how adventuresome we think we are, our actual behavior is remarkably ordinary. In fact, in 2007 our top five restaurant choices were: 1. Hamburgers (last year Americans ate 13 billion of them) 2. French Fries 3. Pizza (We eat 23 pounds a year, per person) 4. Mexican Food, 5. Chicken sandwiches Amazing, isn't it? Maybe if " we " had the ability to spend as much money on " true " public health information as these food companies do on marketing and advertising, we could make a real impact.
