http://www.tillamookheadlightherald.com/news/story.cfm?story_no=7263 Event set to take business hazardous waste Published: August 15, 2006 TILLAMOOK — The Tillamook County Public Works, Department of Solid Waste is sponsoring a hazardous waste collection event next month for businesses that generate small amounts of hazardous waste. Collection will be Friday, Sept. 8, at the Tillamook County Road Department, 503 Marolf Loop (entrance to drop site off Brookfield Road). To encourage the increased collection and proper disposal of mercury from schools, farmers, dentists, automotive repair shops and any other small businesses, mercury waste will be accepted free. Hazardous wastes other than mercury will be accepted, but there will be a charge for them. Types of mercury waste accepted (but not limited to): • Elemental mercury • Thermometers • Thermostats • Blood pressure cuffs • Tilt switches (silent light switches) • Mercury-containing button cell batteries • Fluorescent lights • Mercurochrome • Antiseptic solutions with thimerosal • Manometers • Mercury-containing pesticides This is an opportunity for businesses, agencies, and organizations to conveniently dispose of hazardous waste and waste pesticides safely, legally, and at a reasonable cost. Almost every business in the county is a conditionally exempt generator (CEG) of hazardous waste and may be eligible to participate. A CEG is a company that generates less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month, stores less than 2,200 pounds, and does not have a rare P-listed acutely hazardous waste

above 2.2 pounds. Small businesses interested in participating should call (206) 767-7990 to find out if you are eligible and to register. Registration is required prior to the event. Last day to register is Friday, Sept. 1. After registration you will be given a time to drop off your hazardous materials and the cost will be determined in advance so payment may be made at the time of drop-off. Charges range from $0.85 to $3.10 per pound depending on waste type (Charge for most pesticides is $1.45 per pound). Mercury-containing waste will be accepted at no charge. By participating in this collection event, your hazardous materials will be handled properly and disposed of safely and legally. For additional information or questions, call Solid Waste Coordinator Kathy Schwinck at 815-3975. __________________________________________________
