Subject: [ ] Drinking wine between meals

To all:

For those of us who enjoy our one glass (5 ounces) of wine a day between meals instead of with meals please tell us why drinking it only with meals is recommended. I am extremely health conscious in every way and have successfully practiced CR for years, maintaining a BM! of 18.2. My health is excellent at 72 years old and all lab tests are great. For the last 10 years I have added red wine to my health regimen, one glass in the mid afternoon which I find very refreshing. Any information concerning this subject would be greatly appreciated.

This is what it says on our website: “We value published, peer-reviewed, mainstream scientific sources”.

Also material is sent to every member upon joining (and also in the files) which gives info about the sources we respect here. In fact I just posted about a new book (The Healthy Skeptic by ) which discusses all the nonsense out there.

Sorry for my English : I am French.

I have read on the web that an Italian

study (Trevistan and al, 2001) proves that alcohol taken during the meals

decreases the risk of death from cancer by 17% but doubles the risk when taken

between the meals. But I don’t know where the study has been published.

So I don’t know if the information is reliable.

My French is not that good. Can you translate the applicable part?

Unless the site tells you where the study was published, I would be skeptical. Especially since they sell stuff which should tip you off that they’re not objective. They have a vested interest in the info that they post.

Even published studies should be looked at with skepticism. According to the book “Healthy Skeptic” , which I posted about recently, many studies are backed by companies or persons with a financial interest in the outcome.

Also the study should have many subjects (something we stress here) , should be carried out under strict scientific standards, and should able repeatable.

I translated the page using BabelFish and believe that this is the study in question.  I'm an alcohol and other drug librarian, not a researcher, but this looks like a pretty solid study:  http://www.adaevidencelibrary.com/worksheet.cfm?worksheet_id=115693

Thank you!

Am I reading this correctly that smoking was not considered in the study?

According to the “reviewer”: This study seems uneven in its care in determining mortality; no details are given as to efforts to verify deaths and their cause.

I would be interested if anyone has more info on this study or others on the subject.

I have found another Italian study on the

same subject but limited “Alcohol drinking outside meals and

cancers of the upper aero-digestive tract.”

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12402316

I can’t say if it is reliable.

Subject: RE: [ ] Drinking wine between meals

Sorry for my English : I am French.

I have read on the web that an Italian study (Trevistan and al, 2001) proves

that alcohol taken during the meals decreases the risk of death from cancer by

17% but doubles the risk when taken between the meals. But I don’t know

where the study has been published. So I don’t know if the information is

reliable.

This is what it says on our website: “We value published,

peer-reviewed, mainstream scientific sources”.

Also material is sent to every member upon joining (and also in the files)

which gives info about the sources we respect here. In fact I just posted

about a new book (The Healthy Skeptic by ) which discusses all the

nonsense out there.

As most of our 6 sons drink socially I bought some Burgundy for our 2008 Thanksgiving reunion. The thought of serving alcohol in her home so disturbed my beloved spouse that I shelved the idea. But during the subsequent months I experimented with the burgundy.

My anecdotal convictions:Even 2 fl ozs of 12% wine tended to make me both stupid and unsteady and both got progressively worse up to my limit 8 0z. The stupidity evident in the numerous " crashes " I had when attempting med to difficult SuDoKus.

And the imbalance clear when walking or climbing stairs. But I may sleep better after 2-4 oz wine on going to bed at 10 pm - without any known morning effects. As a jet fighter pilot in the RAF 1949-1956 I drank excessively almost every Sat night and don't recall such sensitivity to ethanol - my current senility (age 81) may be a factor. Very little alcohol intake during the past 50 years.

For what it's worth.Regards to all

Surely by now, we should have some idea whether to use wine or not based on all the "scientific" evidence presented and including the resveratrol "idea"?

We have. The issue seems to be WHEN we’re going to drink it (for those of us who interpret the wine data as beneficial for our health – and even whether or not to drink is debatable).

I, for one, am interested because I have not been drinking my wine with meals as suggested by the two studies posted.

The Claim: Never Drink on an Empty Stomach

By ANAHAD O'CONNOR

Published: December 6, 2005

THE FACTS It's an age-old rule about drinking, one that everyone knows and most

people have broken: always fill up on food before filling up on alcohol.

Common wisdom, of course, suggests a simple reason, that drinking on an empty

stomach will lead to intoxication more quickly. But just how much of a

difference does eating before imbibing really make?

According to several studies and experts on alcohol, a lot. In 1994, one team of

Swedish researchers set out to answer the question by having a group of 10

people consume a few drinks on two separate days.

In one case they drank after an overnight fast, and in the other, they drank

after they ate a modest breakfast.

On the day the subjects ate, the rate of intoxication was slower, even though

the amount of alcohol had not changed. But the subjects also reached

significantly lower blood-alcohol levels over all - on average about 70 percent

of what they were on the day they skipped breakfast.

In some cases, the study found, having a meal before drinking kept a person from

climbing over the legal blood-alcohol limit for driving in most states.

Dr. B. Stratyner, an addiction specialist and associate professor of

psychiatry at Mount Sinai Medical Center, said it all had to do with metabolism.

As soon as alcohol is consumed, he said, the body starts to break it down, but

some is always absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Having food in the stomach - particularly proteins, fats and dense carbohydrates

- slows that absorption process.

The things that speed it up are carbonated mixers, like soda, and higher

temperatures. (Warm drinks are absorbed faster.) Once alcohol is in your blood,

Dr. Stratyner said, neither coffee nor a cold shower will get it out any faster.

This just " proves " our common sense wisdom on drinking before eating - if you're

a person who does not want to drink a lot of alcohol but you like an occasional

wine buzz, its the perfect solution.

They don't call it a social lubricant for nothing. ;-)
