Guest guest
EDUCATION MATTERS: Mercury may play autism role By DAN KIMBER I suspected that there would be feedback from last week's article about boys and girls. Most of my mail was from the ladies who were either in agreement or were appreciative that a male would even suggest that females should take a more active role in running this world of ours. There were a few grumpy males who took umbrage at the suggestion. One snidely commended me for being in touch with my feminine side; another was sure that I was needing to score a few points with the ladies in my life. While that is a lifelong quest for me, it was not in the offing here. In trying to figure out why girls in high school and colleges across the nation are out-performing the boys, one of the more thoughtful responses came from Greg, who suggested that our one-size-fits-all education is turning off more and more students, especially the males, for its lack of relevance and its determination to run all students through the same processing mill. I tend to agree. We should be serving our clientele more as they are and be less hung-up on how we think they should be. By all means let's challenge our kids, but let's also make some effort to find out who and what they are, and how best they might fit into this complicated world. If that means that fewer sonnets and equations and peace treaties are studied, then so be it. One parent contacted me with another possibility. What she told me was shocking. She writes, " I believe what is happening is that this generation of kids is being exposed to an increasing amount of toxins which have effects that we are just beginning to learn about. I have an autistic son and it is quite possible that his autism is a direct result of vaccines given to him at birth — vaccines that routinely contained mercury. " Just for the record, mercury is the second most toxic substance on earth. Even minute quantities cause harm. More than 500,000 kids currently suffer from autism, and pediatricians diagnose more than 40,000 new cases every year. The disease was unknown until 1943 when thimerosal, an additive for vaccinations for newborns that contains 50% ethyl mercury, was mixed in with vaccinations given to newborns and young children. Twyla wrote, " My 14-year-old son received a Hepatitis B vaccination, which contained thimerosal, on the day he was born. This had become routinely recommended for all newborns even though this disease is spread through sexual contact and IV drug use. I guess they felt that they could not trust women to say whether they might be at risk for passing this virus on to the developing fetus, so it was best just to vaccinate all newborns. It did not occur to the powers-that-be that injecting even a tiny amount of mercury into a newborn baby was a very bad idea. And that first shot was only the beginning, as vaccinations continued every few months throughout infancy. " According to [Environmental Protection Agency] standards, the amount of mercury contained in a single vaccination preserved with thimerosal would be considered safe for a 500-pound man. During the 1990s, the number of vaccinations increased dramatically. Nobody in authority thought to add up the amount of mercury being injected into infants, toddlers and children until the turn of the century. Now lets bring it forward to June 16, 2005. A group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting in Norcross, Ga. The purpose of this assembly was to study the disturbing questions being raised about the safety of a host of common childhood vaccines administered to infants and young children. According to a Center for Disease Control spokesman, " thimerosal appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children, including attention-deficit disorder and hyperactivity. Since 1991, when the Center for Disease Control and Federal Drug Administration gave their official stamp of approval to thimerosal, the estimated number of cases of autism had increased 15-fold, from one in every 2,500 children to one in 166 children. Enter Eli Lilly, Merck and a host of other drug companies that knew that thimerosal posed a danger to newborns and yet continued to market it. Their primary concern, you see, was their bottom-line profits. Before 1989, American preschoolers received only three vaccinations — for polio, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis and measles- mumps-rubella. A decade later, thanks to federal recommendations, children were receiving a total of 22 immunizations by the time they reached first grade. As the number of vaccines increased, the rate of autism among children exploded. Despite the fact that studies over the past several decades indicate that mercury tends to accumulate in the brains of primates and other animals after they are injected with vaccines, and that the brains of infants are particularly susceptible, government agencies that are supposed to protect us from such things were not equal to the task. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, for example, has received more than $1 million in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry and has worked studiously to immunize vaccine makers from liability in more than 4,200 lawsuits that have been filed by the parents of injured children. (I wonder, are these the " frivolous lawsuits " that our president works so diligently on our behalf to prevent?) Parents should know what hospitals and doctors are injecting into the bodies of their young children. Assuming that the makers of human vaccines are legally required to disclose exactly what goes into those vaccines, parents should know if thimerosal is in the mix. Better yet, they should have to sign a paper that contains very large print and a stern warning: This may be extremely hazardous to the health of your child. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- DAN KIMBER is a teacher in the Glendale Unified School District, where he has taught for more than 30 years.
