The problem with neurodiverse crowd is that they want to take actual

abuse instances and apply them to all cases of therapy. When my 20 mo

old daughter began speech/aba therapy she was put in a soft, padded

high-chair-type seat that buckled her in where she couldn't get out.

I've heard people accuse me of allowing her to be restrained. No one

considers putting their 9 mo old in a high chair to feed them

restraining, yet because it was to do ABA in a very friendly,

positive-only, playtime setup and she didn't have the physical ability

to hold herself up, it's suddenly restraining? C'mon! By the 3rd visit

Allie LOVED being in that chair because it was comforting to her.

Another problem is that we NT people do have a tendancy *at times* to

wish away any " odd " or " different " behavior to the point of really

hurting our kids' self-esteem and coping abilities. Some parents are

so heart-sick about their kids they try to do everything to make them

normal, even stressing out over their kid flapping their hands because

they just got a Christmas present or something fun. In this instance,

the ND crowd does have a point.

Another problem I have with ND crowd is that most of them are very

high-functioning. They ignore the statements of those low-functioning

who say they are miserable because they cannot interact with others

and blame it on no family support to help them accept themselves. The

ND crowd has the very thing that prevents them from considering

others' feelings, so chances are they aren't going to change anytime

soon, though I do seem some of them moving more into understanding our

point as they realize some of them do have serious health problems

related to mercury poisoning.
