Guest guest
Here’s a discussion about it on WebMD. Controversial and no scientific evidence (only his one rat experiment – if he is to be believed – after all diet books do sell.....) that it’s anything but a gimmick. http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/shangri-la-diet On 9/4/10 5:32 PM, " questsinca " <questsin@...> wrote: Any one have any particular opinions on the " Shangri-La Diet? Guest guest
What caught my eye about this particular diet for CRers in general is the concept of new food as a eustress point for the mechanism of stress, adaptation, and regulation of homeostasis. This could be implemented by incorporating massive variety of food sources, recipes, and cooking methods.. and not eating the same old foods on rotation. At a macro and micro nutrient level, macro/micro nutrients should be cycled but average out to optimal at a week or even monthly level. Eating the standard recommendation of macro and micro nutrients on a daily basis has always troubled me knowing that some vitamins and minerals interfere with each other. I'd like to see two separate experiments.. 1) fixed food source, optimum nutrition vs. extreme variety of food sources optimum nutrition. 2) optimum nutrition balanced out daily vs. optimum nutrition balanced out weekly vs. optimum nutrition balanced out monthly > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Any one have any particular opinions on the " Shangri-La Diet? Guest guest
When I first started working on weight maintenance and health I started with a Shangri-la and Caloric Restriction based diet. I read the Shangri-la Diet book and I was not really convinced of the science and rationale behind it, but on some level it made sense, so I thought it was worth the try. I opted for the oil (instead of the sugar route due to potential insulin/blood sugar issues) since I do not get enough Omega-3s. I started with Flax Seed Oil which was the healthiest one that he listed and it was also, coincidentally the nastiest. I took 2 tbsp of oil at lunch and it work wonders for me. I lost 15 lbs in 2 months going from 165 down to 150lbs. It crushed all urges that I had to snack and reduced my appetite by a lot allowing me get more control over eating habits. I did feel a bit strange the first 2 weeks as my body was adapting to the new way of eating. Minus the nastiness of the oil where I had to suppress my gag reflex it worked well and was a 'great' experience. If I was to do it again I will try the light olive oil approach which is not so bad. I was not on board with the eat whatever you want idea, which I suppose definitely sells better. He does mention in one sentence, if I remember correctly, that crappy food in is even crappier if you are eating less, which is where the Caloric Restriction comes in for me - eating less and eating healthier. I really wish he would have expounded on a real requirement to eat healthier instead of saying eat what you want. I, in some way felt that it was irresponsible of him not to mention it. =( To me Shangri-la and Caloric Restriction seemed the perfect combination. http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/omega-3-000316.htm http://www.sethroberts.net/science/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shangri-La_Diet > > > Any one have any particular opinions on the " Shangri-La Diet?
