Guest guest
Hi all: Dallas received MMR in September '95 at age 1 yr. 2 mo. He walked at 17 months and was already spinning his plastic donuts at that time. My mother knew some was up then. But, from age 1.5 to 2.5, he was actually beginning to say words and animal sounds. Then he began to regress and started forming long lines of his stuffed animals. His autism did not really " manifest " until after his sister's birth. For a long time, we attributed his regression to his sister's getting more attention as the baby. The doc who formally diagnosed the autism disabused us of this notion. He didn't recognize his sister as a person until she could walk. Dallas will be 6 in June. He does a lot of what I've read from you guys. Grunting, " eeeet, " " mamamama. " The only time I get " Dahdeee! " is when I make him do something he doesn't wish to do. No interest in the potty. Keeps most of the doors in the house shut for us. Receptive language way above expressive. Very much into videotapes. Sits around flapping his stuffed animals and examining his hands. The local school has an autistic kids preschool for 4-5 yr. olds, which has been good for learning to follow routine. We regressed last summer without it. So, back on topic, do I tie his autism to his shots? Yes, I think I do. Because he definitely didn't come out of the womb autistic (at one time, it appeared he would become a high-functioning, mildly retarded Downs kid). My wife disagrees, noting that the diseases which MMR immunizes against are quite deadly. My question, if I were a researcher, would be " Why are just some kids affected?
