I hope I can be as strong as you when Seth goes to school. He is only in

preschool now, so I don't have a lot of things to handle yet. I know when he

gets to kindergarten things will change big time. I was sure I would home

school him, like my other kids. Now, I am not so sure that is what is right

for him, or our other kids. The bussing situation here is cruddy, and I

don't like battles, so I guess I will wait and see if it is worth fighting

for when the time comes. I can't imagine going through 5 IEP's, YIKES!!!!

One is too much stress for me. I hate those things! Good luck with your

upcoming meeting.

Gail, One of the keys is to know the law. We have used the Protection and

Advocacy site on line. I print the sections that pertain to my kids age and

needs(pre-school, general info, inclusion, etc.) I highlight the things I

think apply to that child. Put it in a folder with 2 pockets, left and

right. The first thing I do is lay this out on the table in front of us in

full view of the administrators. If something they sound does not sound

right, I look it up. Also when we leave my copy of the IEP goes into the

folder, I don't loose anything on the way out.

Also, if they say no to your request, ask why and have that answer put in

writing.

Bussing--here is wonderful--garry just started driving last week. Our kids

are picked up right at the door. And a child can not be on the bus more

than an hour. That is going to be our latest issue I think. Bus 6, not my

kids bus but the one Garry droves, lets kids off at 3 schools. The last

school is gotten to at 8:10. the kids are not gotten off the bus until

8:30! 20 minutes with a severly autistic boy and several kids with ds. We

don't feel they should be on the bus for this time. Let the aides come get

them. I'll let you know how things go on that one. My kids also have to

sit on the bus but don't know for how long.

We do try not to be too aversarial but there are times.... And there was a

time about 3 weeks ago I considered taking JJ out and homeschooling him.

& Garry, parents of (9), (8), JJ (6), (5), and

Esther (3). All adopted & with Down Syndrome.

Wow, are you on top of things or what! I just can't imagine doing all

that for 5 kids. I file everything for Seth, and it's so much! I have much

less with all the paperwork and quarterly reports on homeschooling both of my

girls. Last time I made a list and went through it at our IEP. That helped,

but I usually have a million questions a week later, after I have had time to

go over everything and think about it.

I am eager to check out the site you mentioned. As for bussing here, I

know the kids can legally be on the bus at least 1 1/2 hours (or more maybe).

One day the bus picks up at 7:15, and the next day they may not come until

8:05. I hate this part more than anything. The bussing alone is enough to

make me want to keep Seth home and teach him myself. Thanks for all the info

.
