I think the operative phrase here is that these are people who have been taking the drugs for a “long time” and so their bones should be stronger and not subject to fracture. Also suspiciously, this is a very rare type of fracture. Of course it would help if we could read the actual study.

Al Pater (or anyone else) if you have access to the study, please post. Thanks in advance.

From the article:

" Based on the report we now feel that there is a definitive relationship between these class of drugs and these fractures, and it's even stronger in those taking those drugs for a long time,............The reported cases of so-called atypical femur fractures represent less than one percent of all types of hip and thigh fracture”

I am suspicious of the cited study. They claim there is increased risk for a rare type of thigh (I assume they meant femur) fracture among people who take the drugs. But people who are taking the drugs are presumably at increased risk for bone fractures already. It is devilishly hard to factor this out. I confess I have not read the original paper but color me skeptical.

Thanks for this. Actually the conclusion said that the fractures are very rare even for those taking the drugs. Perhaps all this fuss by the media is unwarrented. Any other opinions after reading the study??
