Help for severe reflux

Lori,

had severe reflux up to about 3 1/2 yrs. old. He has a g-tube as

well, but that didn't do much for the reflux. There is a procedure called a

Nissen Fundoplacation (sp?) that ties off the sphinter muscle at the top of

the stomach so that it contracts closed when the stomach sloshes liquid up.

The down side is that they can't vomit if they get the flu either. You have

to use the g-tube to evacuate the stomach. That procedure was the only thing

that helped . He stopped having aspiration pneumonias and wheezing

(the docs kept telling me he had asthma) and no more vomiting!! We weren't

able to find a med that would control the reflux.

Hi, I haven't posted in awhile because my son Tommy for about 4 weeks has been

throwing up every 2 days or so about 1 hour after his meals. The ped. thinks

his reflux is returning 3 years ago he had a gj tube. He is now on Zantac,

doesn't seem to be helping, he really doesn't even want to eat any more and is

throwing up his Zoloft every few days so behavior has been horrible. He sees

the general surgeon for a hernia this week and the gi on Nov 6 that is the first

appt I could get, I am wondering what advice anyone has in dealing with this or

if it could be something more serious then reflux, I feel so badly for Tommy, he

has lost 4 pound he now weighs 38 pnds and is 6 years old. I have blankets

everywhere all over the house in case he throws up and he did on the school bus

the other day and almost choked and the driver almost wrecked he was so afraid,

now I am fighting for an aid for him, with no luck, PLEASE if anyone has any

words of wisdom let me know, I am at my wits end with worry about him.

Thanks,

Lori (mom to 11, Shayne 8 and Tommy ds,autism, and now reflux again!)

poor litlle guy, our prayers that things start ding better soon for him, i

think i would tell them its an emergency, he will get dehydrated, and has

lost 4lbs, that is awful!! they need to seem him very soon not 2-3 weeks from

now when he could be hospitalized allready ffrom all this vomitting. All i

can say for the vomitting i wuld try very small meals, maybe even just bytes

every hour or so, bland food, and pedialyte to drink in sips at a time no

gulping it down. hope this helps some, lots of luck amd prayers, shawna.

Lori,

My heart goes out to you and Tommy and so do my prayers. It seems to me that

if it is unsafe for Tommy to ride without an aide on the school bus, they

must provide him with one. Also, I'm surprised the GI is making Tommy wait

until Nov. 6 for an appointment when he is throwing up constantly. Do they

know how ill he is and that he's already lost 4 pounds? Can you really lay

it on thick and insist that they squeeze him in earlier? If they refuse, you

might want to consider another GI doc who is more responsive to Tommy's

needs. has never had a reflux problem, so I really can't comment

beyond this. Hang in there,

Maureen

Hi Lori,

How are things going with Tommy? Brook had severe reflux and did have

the Nissen-fundoplication when he was just 4 yrs old. We were told that

certain foods can make reflux worse, such as chocolate and tomato sauces.

Did the doctor ever give you a list of foods to avoid? You might want to

look into that as one form of treatment. The antacids don't prevent reflux,

but they help a lot with heartburn which is extremely painful. So, they can

be really important. Hope your doctor apt. goes well.

Oh Lori. I'm so sorry. Maddie (soon to be 7, DS, ASD, and GERD) is on

reglan and it's working like a charm. SHe had a solid year of no reflux and

we thought we were home free. Then, this past summer, it started up again,

much worse than ever. Everybody on the list remembers how terrified I was.

Throw up was everywhere I turned and she was miserable and EXTREMELY

autistic. GI guy put her on the reglan and zantac and she is doing great.

She started doing it again, so I upped her dose myself. We go to the doc

next month and he'll up it anyway, I'm sure. She's gained 10 lbs since

February, but only 6 since she was at the GI docs, so her meds obviously need

to be adjusted.

All I can say is I feel for you!!! My stomach was in knots that entire time.

My heart just broke for Maddie, so I understand what you're going through.

I hope your GI doc can find soemthign that works.
