I just started the self directed program for personal care and need all advice I

can get. With the agencies the worker situation got ridiculous! Some good,

some were nightmares. But one consistent thing I found - in their 'training'

they get the impression that 30 to 45 minutes of every hour is spent SITTING.

One even refused to sweep my den.

I know the technicalities of what to do- just need any little tips from

experience you can offer. .

Hello Carla,

I have been using a similar program here in New York since 1996. It definitely

takes some work, but I feel, the trade-off in controlling your life is worth the

effort.

There is not really a perfect/magic way to make this program work for you. It

all depends on what you are seeking most and want addressed. For me,

reliability is most important. Right now I have a pretty good team. Three of

my four workers are relatively long-term employees and everyone takes care of

their basic responsibilities without too much supervision, after I have trained

them. Three members of the team are practically " competitive cleaners " which I

also find quite valuable. The fourth member of my team, is not so tidy, but he

is willing, when I give him direct instructions. Altogether it works out well!

As for recruitment, usually I go with referrals and recommendations from

friends. Otherwise, I have used craigslist. My longest employee, ,

responded to my ad on craigslist and he is practically a member of the family.

I always conduct a somewhat formal interview and have them fill out a form with

some basic information. I specifically do not use a written job description. I

explain the general scope of the position, but usually end up tailoring what I

asked them to do, partly based on their skills.

I hope this helps a little, and, please feel free to ask any additional

questions.

i use cds (consumer directed services). i live in a college town and prefer

students with difficult majors. i find the harder they have to work in school,

the more responsible they are! i expect a lot and state that from the very

beginning. 3 strikes and they are out... no call/no show and they are out. no

texting, homework, downtime. with that said, i treat them well and try to be

flexible as well. my best advice is high expectations and no experience! it is

so much better to teach how you want things done!
