Guest guest
I haven't heard or experienced anything like this but the fact that it is once a month suggests it's connected to a possible hormone imbalance. My guess is an autoimmune disorder that is self destructing when she is ovulating. Completely separate from the SMA. But that's only a guess. Or. Option B. Allergic reaction to a particular food she eats once a month. Sounds a bit out there but they're finding all sorts of unusual allergic reactions that are not the common hives or constricted airway. Best of luck. Guest guest
Okay, first thing's first. WHATEVER is causing this, it is clearly serious enough given the wide, disparate spectrum of symptoms you need an actual medical consultation. Either take her in when she's feeling good and explain the symptoms to the doc, or at the very least get her in immediately next time it happens. I would ask her if she's short of breath and/or has any chest pain while breathing during (as well as leading up to) these spells. Nearly all of the symptoms you describe ring extremely similar to something that I experience from time to time. Occasionally, usually after a very long day upright in my chair, I will have built up a lot of secretions in the lower lobes of my lungs. I know this, because throughout the day, I will progressively grow shorter of breath. Once I get home and lie down, I'll start to breathe more rapidly, and begin to feel chills coming on. My temperature will spike into the low 100s for about an hour, then break. By the next morning, I'll be right as rain, but in the meantime I feel like I'm in the middle of a terrible flu: moderate nausea, aching in my bones (that's worst in my femurs, hips, and knees), can't get warm (even though I'm actually burning up) etc. Sound familiar? Eventually, during a checkup, I explained this all to my doctor, and he hypothesized what the problem might be, which fits perfectly. After one of your pulmonary lobes reaches a certain tipping point of filling with fluid, the lobe collapses. You don't notice it, aside from a slight shortness of breath, because all the others are still working. But when this happens, your body automatically releases a " stress protein " into your bloodstream. This protein causes you to instantly spike a huge fever until it is metabolized. That fever, in turn causes the " chills " as well as the physical pain, which for me was concentrated in my legs. The lack of color stems from diminished circulation and blood oxygenation, which is caused by a combination of the fever and diminished respiration. Obviously, there is a chance that this isn't what your daughter is experiencing, so a medical opinion is a must. The similarities seem pretty striking, though, so I would be sure to look into it further. Definitely check to see if she remembers any shortness of breath, because that would be a strong indicator. As for the frequency of occurrences, I'd be hesitant to jump to the conclusion that it's hormonal. There is a strong difference between " happens about once every month " and " happens like clockwork the same time every month, " and it seems like you're describing the former. For me, it didn't happen every day by any stretch. Just once in a while, when I happened to not do a good enough job clearing secretions throughout the day. - (26, type 2) > > My 19yr old daughter has sma type 2..for the past 6 months or so she has been spiking a high temp 103, vomiting once or twice shaking, very very cold.I actually take my hair blow dryer and run it all over her body. Guest guest
Can we all just assume she's already spoken to the doctors? Really, I was under the impression this group was to share information and support with others impacted by SMA. We've all had the experience of having to educate doctors about our disability so I'm pretty sure they don't know all the details of living with SMA. And, if this thread is anything to go by, there's a significant number of us having symptoms that my doctors never mentioned to me. What a wonderful thing that sharing information might actually help find solutions.
