My niece Jade moved into the dorms at UC Berkeley today. Awesome big room

and really good access; plus other students with disabilities to learn from and

collaborate with. There are required independent living skills classes taught

by people with disabilities in the community, and there are attendants on call

throughout the semester as backup even after she hires her own. As bedtime

approached she got a little nervous about having new attendants and a male

attendant for turning her throughout the night, but I know she'll do great. Mom

and dad are staying at the hotel around the corner and they'll finish setting up

her room/computer tomorrow, then she's a bird leaving the nest.

Wooo hoo!

You are excited. I bet mom and dad are pretty nevous!  I can feel a knot in

my stomach, and we are not even talking about Anmei!

I'm very excited and happy for Jade.  Oh, man! That's a giant step!

I think I'm going to talk Anmei into going to San State. :)

OK. No panic.  I still have a few more years to prepare myself.

Oh, yes. Mom and dad are very nervous. Fortunately this independent living

dorm program has a 40 year track record and they really know what they're doing

with all types and levels of disability. Today they'll make all Jade's remote

control door opener buttons easy to push, and set up a switch that will activate

a phone that she can use in bed. So many details!

Take a deep breath, Ping! Save all that nervousness for dorm move-in day.

Enjoy these at-home years. Anmei is gonna do great and you're a good mom who's

preparing her well.

Alana,

Excellent! It must be really great to have an aunt who really understands

being a kid going to school with a disability. I envy her. :-)

Go Jade!

These years in the dorms will be so exciting for you and give you so much

self-confidence! The 4 years at my undergrad not only taught me that I could

take care of myself but that the whole world was truly mine, too. So proud of

you. Just speak up for what you need and don't settle for less. Pretty soon

you'll barely have time to worry about your care - homework, parties, friends

and guys take up a lot of time!

Enjoy! Ellyn

P.S.: Parents, just have faith!

This is amazing. One of my biggest regrets was my inability to go away to

college. Am thrilled to see that limitation is less of an issue. Go Jade!

It is really great to see someone is able to move on to college with such

available facilities. I really hope that my girl can do that in my country when

she grows up....  Cheers!
