Guest guest
Hey , I'm so sorry this happened. Tylenol is not an anti-inflamitory so it will only help pain but not the swelling. I recommend ibuprofen (Advil) if your stomach can tolerate it, or neproxen (Aleve). When I had a similar injury I alternated cold packs with heat packs. For the first 3 days I needed percocet. Acupuncture didn't touch the pain. Good luck, Alana > > Hey all, > > Last Thursday evening, I had a bit of a close call / freak accident. While transferring from my shower gurney to the toilet using my Hoyer lift, one of the straps for the part of the sling that goes under my legs slipped off the hook and I tumbled out! I took a slight bump to the head on the tile floor, but was mostly saved by the fact that my left leg got tangled up in the sling on the way down. I ended up hanging upside down by my leg like some sort of inept amateur bungee jumper! > > A trip to the ER, several x-rays, and a CAT scan later, the official diagnosis was that my head was fine and nothing was broken in my leg, but I sustained significant ligament damage to my knee. Right now, I'm back at home, but I'm largely stuck laying on my back with my left leg relatively immobilized since any twisting of the knee joint is absolutely excruciating. > > So, I'm reaching out to see how those of y'all that have sustained injuries have dealt with pain. I've always avoided pain medication, and so far I haven't taken anything other than Tylenol (which was mostly just for the swelling). Are there any pain meds that have potential risks with SMA? Also, have any of you taken a liquid pain medication? I can't safely swallow pills whole, and I'm leery of the idea of crushing up a pain pill since it seems like that could significantly alter the absorption rate. > > Thanks! > - >
Guest guest
Hi, , Wow--that is so scary! I almost had that happen once. The person who secured the right leg strap didn't have it completely " hooked " and as she was lowering me into the shower chair the weight shifted and it slipped off. Fortunately, I was almost seated and didn't fall out. I broke my femur several years ago and no pain medicine helped except Fetanyl patches. While it did the trick it was extremely hard to get of it (physically addicting). I had to ween off and taper down the dose with liquid morphine which was all monitored and prescribed by my primary care doctor. The one thing I will say is that many narcotic pain meds slow down respiratory rates which can be dangerous for those (like me) who already have breathing issues. Like Alana shared, Advil is an anti-inflammatory which can help with swelling. I have hypertension so I can't take it and must stick to Tylenol. Not sure if you are aware of that. ~a From: 3 <hawk_stryke@...> Subject: Pain management suggestions? Guest guest
Hope you feel better soon, . When I came home from surgery I tried percoset but only for 1 night because it did a number on my lungs. For me, 800 mgs of Ibuprofen worked well but take them with food so your stomach will tolerate it. Take care. Terri
Guest guest
That's not a close call, that's a freakishly painful fall. Am glad your bones aren't broken but soft tissue damage is a pain to heal. I use codeine #4 as needed but those are pills so might not be the best choice for you. Tried the medicated patches? Might be your best bet. I tend to use a combination of nutrition to lower inflammation, acupuncture and meds for pain management. Hope this helps. > > Hey all, > > Last Thursday evening, I had a bit of a close call / freak accident.
