Guest guest
Alana, That is so awesome! I called my husband at work and told him about it the day I read this. Although, I can't imagine Brett ever leaving home- because he is a momma's boy- haha. I try and try to make him independent but he has no desire to go away to MDA camp or anything. Last year, he was excited about going up until the week before camp, then he had panic attacks and was just in tears about the thought of going. He is extremely independent as long as I am in the vicinity or with people he knows very well and trusts, but he has a hard time trusting others with his care. Fortunately this independent living dorm program has a 40 year track record and they really know what they're doing with all types and levels of disability. Today they'll make all Jade's remote control door opener buttons easy to push, and set up a switch that will activate a phone that she can use in bed. So many details! Take a deep breath, Ping! Save all that nervousness for dorm move-in day. Enjoy these at-home years. Anmei is gonna do great and you're a good mom who's preparing her well. Alana > > You are excited. Guest guest
Hi Kristal, Poor Brett. Panic attacks are awful. I hope he does indeed go to camp soon. One of the best things Jade and I ever did. A suggestion or two: What about you getting a motel room near his camp for that 1st night he's at camp so he'll know you're nearby but you're not there? Or have a family friend volunteer to be a camp counselor, maybe even someone else's counselor, but someone he knows? Hugs! Alana > > Alana, > That is so awesome! Guest guest
Kristal, I know his is a little off topic, more like a tangent than a real departure but I wanted to share my experience. Many, many, *many* moons ago, my parents sent me to MDA camp. I would pout and complain, pitch occasional fits and all of it was based on fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of what might happen without my familiar support system. Looking back, I am profoundly grateful they shipped me off to camp. It gave me a chance to learn how to make independent decisions, trust new people and discover that I was much more capable than I thought. Talk to the organizers, check out the facilities, make sure the staff can deal with Brett's specific needs, then consider the long term benefits for his social skills. I may have complained as a kid but the adult I am today is glad they sent me off to camp. Susie > > > > You are excited.
