Guest guest
Hi Alana, I don't have experience with that but I'm glad you're home. ~a ________________________________ From: althegrrl <alanarutht@...> Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2012 4:33 PM Subject: Recovery Advice  Hi All, I just got out of the hospital on Wednesday. This is proving to be an especially difficult recovery with more than usual fatigue. Is there anyone here with experience recovering from metabolic acidosis? Guest guest
Hey Alana, Ugh, sorry to hear you had a bout. Back when I was younger, I used to deal with acidosis on a regular basis (almost every year and a half or so). For me, it was ketoacidosis, which is a *type* of metabolic acidosis caused by my body using up its glycogen stores and starting to try to break down my muscles. Might not have been the exact same that you had, but the resulting symptoms (acidosis) are the same. So, for me, the fatigue was really twofold. The most significant part was just hypoglycemia. Once the ketoacidosis was in full swing, I couldn't keep food or liquids down, which was a vicious cycle, since I couldn't introduce new sugars/carbohydrates to my system, making the ketoacidosis even worse. In the hospital, once they got me hydrated & got my blood sugar under control via IV, I would perk up pretty quickly -- at least comparatively! At home, it was just a matter of making sure I had enough simple & preferably natural sugars in my diet (fructose ftw!) to let my body completely recover. Real fruit juice is your friend, here, believe me. Simple sugars break down quickly, though, and your body will go into a fasting period overnight if you aren't careful. The doctor that finally " solved " my acidosis mystery recommended drinking a glass of milk with some cornstarch in it before bed. The milk isn't necessary (if you don't like it or avoid dairy), of course; it's really just a delivery system. The important thing is the cornstarch. Having some carbohydrates in your gut will give your body something to do during the night, and it will slowly break it down into sugars. Now, the downer part is the other contributor to your fatigue: after a bout of acidosis, your body is HAMMERED. Not only has your blood recently plummeted in pH, becoming acid and literally burning (or at least irritating) your arterial vascular system, but your body has also been attacking your muscles & liver in an attempt to feed itself. It's basically like your body's been on a weeklong bender AND gotten beat up a couple times. That's the kind of thing with no magic remedy. It's going to take a bit of time to feel back to normal. Carefully monitoring your sugar/carb intake will certainly help, but part of it is just letting your body recoup. Let me know if you have any other questions! - > > Hi All, > > I just got out of the hospital on Wednesday. This is proving to be an especially difficult recovery with more than usual fatigue. Guest guest
Thank you for this, . I'm sorry you had to go through this, too. It seems that all my numbers are back to normal except my blood count. Now to piece together the cause of all this. Your information is helpful. Cheers!
