We took the bipap, but as checked baggage. You can call the airline ahead of

time to make sure.

Whenever I travel I take it as a carry-on and depending on the air-line it

typically doesn't count as your one carry-on. I wouldn't trust taking it as

checked baggage because you never know when they are going to lose baggage.

What kind of a BiPAP did you have? Was it with an external battery? Did you

need to use it? How were you feeling during the flight? Any breathing problems?

I'm not sure the type of bi-pap I have but I never use it when I fly. When I was

younger and weaker I took a breathing test at the hospital to make sure flying

was safe. I'd recommend you talk to your doctors about that test. I had to fly

using the oxygen mask the whole time back then. But my lungs are stronger now so

I don't need to do that now.

What kind of a breathing test was it? Was it something that somehow simulates

the same air pressure and air consistency that is in planes?

Hi,

I flew few times and will again this Summer. I`ve never had any problems, just

don`t really like transfers to this special airplane transfer chair and then to

the normal plane seat and then back. But other than that it`s ok. I don`t use

BiPap. Never had breathing problems during flight either.

Have a fun trip!

When I've flown with my vent we put the vent under my seat and the sealed 12v

gel cell battery under my attendant's seat. I used it throughout the flights,

but I always use it anyway. One idiot travel agent told me I could plug the

ventilator in on the plane...Incorrect. By coincidence I was on the same flight

as Ed . He had a spare battery he let me borrow.

So, you didn't feel any more problems with breathing than you usually feel

anyway? Did you have to have any letters from your doctor to show to the

airlines?

I felt pretty much the same. I didn't need a doctor's letter but you should

check with the airline about this. I haven't flown since pre-9/11. I know I

would need a prescription for my IV bags because they're over the 4 oz liquid

limit.

Thank you! One more question to all of you. Has anybody got sick after their

flights because of circulated air in planes?

Hi Aul,

I've not had problems with breathing on an airplane anymore than usual. I don't

carry a doctor's note either.

I bring my ventilator and excess medical equipment in a rolling fold-up box all

the way to the gate with me. I tell them I will " gate check it " along with my

power wheelchair right before boarding. I have to tell and re-tell the airport

personnel that my wheelchair weighs 440 pounds and they MUST use an elevator

instead of " bumping it " down the stairs to load it on the airplane. I don't use

a BiPAP so I can't answer your question related to that. I do bring my portable

suction bag onto the plane and store it either under our seat or in the overhead

compartment. It runs on batteries so it doesn't require an electrical outlet.

Once I am ready to get out of my wheelchair I detach the joystick " brain " and

bring that on the plane with me. I show them how to disengage the power so they

can manually push my wheelchair to where they need to take it. Anything

removable (i.e., lateral support pads, headrest, etc) I take off the chair and

keep with me in the overhead compartment so there is less of a chance for it to

get lost or damaged.

My hardest part with air travel is the discomfort I experience from sitting in

the airplane seat. I have extremely wimpy neck and torso muscles and cannot hold

myself upright. I end up with a very sore neck and other body aches/pains.

Hope this helps! ~a

Hello,

How is everyone?

I would like to know how many of you have taken a plane flight? What was your

destination? Did you have a BiPAP with you? Did you need to use it? Please let

me know about your experience. I will need to take a flight this summer, but the

last time when I was in a plane was about 15 years ago and I don't know what to

expect. I would really appreciate your replies.

Sincerely,

Aul
