Guest guest
Hi, Shari. We don't have a routine sensory diet, rather a "grab bag" full of tricks. A lot of people have written me privately about their kids behaving this way after getting over a sickness, which is exactly what happened. Also, talked with our developmental ped and we're gonna try 2 weeks without the Ritalin. Good reminder about the sensory diet, though. I can sometimes forget these things.AmyFrom: sharigoldberg22@... <sharigoldberg22@...>Subject: Re: [ ] need help with scripting Date: Friday, January 29, 2010, 2:12 PM Sorry for the typo. Guest guest
Also, this all happened over illness/Christmas break/illness. DS hasn't needed antibiotics in quite a long time--got a double ear infection right before break (antibiotics), Christmasbreak, then back to school and sick with a virus that first week back. I can't believe I forgot to include this. Talked with developmental ped who recommended a 2 week break from Ritalin. Anything else you have to offer would be appreciated--thanks!AmyFrom: Amy <basketdeals4u@...>Subject: need help with scripting"autism ohio" <autismohio >Cc: "biomed group" <Autism-Biomed-Ohio >, , asagreaterakron Date: Friday, January 29, 2010, 1:38 PMMy son has always been a scripter. I understand he uses this as "down" time and have no problem with that. Lately, however, his scripting is out of control and is disrupting others (and his own learning) in the classroom. We are constantly prompting him to "turn the TV off" in his head. He can even tell us what TV episode/book/movie he's thinking about. We have been severely limiting "screen" time and the scripting level has not changed. He is is on Ritalin and we have been experimenting with dosages (including none), all of which appear to have no effect (previously, we did notice a slight decrease in scripting while on ritalin). We run a home ABA program as well. This totally seems out his his control right now, which is why every ABA technique we've tried doesn't seem to be working. Any medications or supplements which may help with this? Thanks in advance for any help.Amy

Guest guest
Have you spoke with your ABA consultant about instituting a self-management program? When my son's scripting was out of control, a self-management program decreased the scripting significantly. We used a watch that had a count down timer that re-set itself every so many minutes (we were able to set the intervals - we started with 2 minutes and then gradually increased it to 10 minutes). There is a company that also makes a small pager type device that does the same thing and can be placed in a child's pocket. When the timer went off it would vibrate (no noise -- only a vibration sensation felt by the child). If the child did not do any scripting during the time interval, he would give himself a check mark on a small chart he had on his desk. After so many check marks, he would earn a prize (pre-determined by child and staff). We did this for a few 30-minute time periods during the school day over a period of several weeks (the time periods selected were those period of the day when it seemed that the scripting was the most distracting). The scripting became worse (extinction burst) before it finally stopped altogether. My son still scripts at home, but not at school. I guess I'm ok with that (it doesn't seem to interfere with his interactions). It might be worth a try for you. Debbie Z. > > My son has always been a scripter. Guest guest
Actually, that's what my consultant thought. I made an appt with Dr. Demio and got in tomorrow. I've never felt like he's had yeast issues (went through one round with Nystatin & one with Diflucan and no changes); yet I wonder. Thank you for suggesting this. I will discuss it with Demio tomorrow and report back! Guest guest
Thanks for keeping us posted. We are dealing with this too. Somebody suggested possible puberty issues if your child is of that age. Noah is twelve so that applies to him. Also, we are doing a 20 minute or so workout routine daily with light weights, stationary bike, treadmill, ball, abs, yoga etc. Started it this week and he likes it. Great for both of us too! Guest guest
Happy to help! Our son loves to swim and do yoga which seems to really help with his sensory issues. Guest guest
It started in 2010 to help get people in our county in better shape and was advertised several times in The Plain Dealer and on tv. I think it is still going on. I would check your local Y and see if there is an age restriction. If there is maybe you could explain and see if they can have your son join with you.
