From the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities Dear Parents,The US Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) in Washington, DC is visiting the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) for a verification visit on October 26, 2009 to learn how the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004 and the Ohio law is working for families and their children. (See Survey Monkey link below for Survey) To determine this, OSEP has asked that parents take a brief survey to share their experiences. Responses are confidential, names will not be used and results will be presented in summary form. Your opinion is valuable and will help OSEP evaluate how Ohio is serving children with disabilities and the impact of IDEA 2004, the special education law. Both Part C and Part B surveys are available. We ask that parents complete the Part B form if they have children with disabilities ages 3 up to 22. If they have children ages birth up to 3, we ask that they fill out the Part C form. We look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your time! Please complete the surveys on line by September 30, 2009. If you have questions, please feel free to call us at 800-374-2806 or 740-382-5452. One of these reforms included the expansion of state income tax deduction for employer sponsored benefits. Under the new law, a taxpayer with employer provided coverage may get favorable state tax treatment for coverage of " qualifying relatives " and members of the taxpayer's household that receive benefits from the taxpayer's employer, without regard to income and support. This tax deduction may be available for coverage of domestic partners, older age children, siblings, parents, grandparents, extended family and other members of the taxpayer’s household who qualify under the statute. This new provision is found at Ohio Revised Code Section 5747.01(11) © and (d). Anyone with questions about this new provision and health insurance should call the Department’s consumer hotline at 1-800-686-1526 and visit www.insurance.ohio.gov for more information. FAQs on HB 1 can be found at http://www.insurance.ohio.gov/Consumer/Pages/HealthCareReformProvisions.aspx. Since we continuously update our FAQs, do remember to check back periodically for current information. ----------------------------------------------------First Lady Francis Strickland Leads Ohio’s Disability Employment Awareness CelebrationDate/Time: October 8, 2009, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Location:  Ohio Statehouse West Lawn (in case of rain: Statehouse Atrium) You are cordially invited to join Ohio’s First Lady Francis Strickland as she leads Ohio’s celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness month on the west lawn of the Ohio Statehouse on Thursday, October 8, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The theme for this year’s celebration is Ohio Workers with Disabilities: Diverse, Reliable, Good for Business. We will be recognizing our American Recovery & Reinvestment Act Stimulus Projects and local Pathways Partners that are strengthening Ohio’s statewide network of disability employment services. The Event is sponsored by the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission and the Governor’s Council on People with Disabilities. RSC is the state agency charged with helping Ohioans with disabilities get jobs and helping businesses recruit and retain these talented workers. The Governor’s Council on People with Disabilities is the 21-member council that advises Ohio’s governor and General Assembly on statewide disability issues. One in five or 2.1 million Ohioans has a disability. October is National Disability Awareness Month, an excellent time to consider hiring an employee with a disability and to celebrate the great talents these workers bring to the workforce. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. The FREE event will showcase:   * Ohio’s First Lady Francis Strickland, Keynote speaker   * New RSC Administrator - Rench   * School for the Deaf signing the pledge of allegiance    * Ohio workers with disabilities and their employers   * Assistive technology on display   * Artwork from the Hattie Larlham Creative Arts School, Akron Ohio. At present, Dr. Holzer is a behavior analyst in a school district in Mississippi, working with a student population of extreme-at-risk students. He is fully aware of the challenges teachers face. He brings his extensive personal experience as a teacher and his medical expertise to this program as well as his experience working as a consultant to educators.           Teachers recognize that there are more students with behavior problems in our classrooms today than in years past and that many of the problems seem more severe. Most teachers were not trained to deal with these problems, or with the fact that frequently they find two, three, or even more students with serious behavior problems in one classroom. In this workshop Dr. Holzer, offers evidence-based strategies to work with difficult, defiant, unmotivated, angry, and emotionally disturbed children and adolescents. This program will provide you with strategies to enhance learning, build self-esteem, and control disruptive and otherwise troublesome behavior.            We will discuss the causes of these problems (conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, depression and bipolar disorder, bullying, societal violence, parental mismanagement, among others) and, on this foundation, build practical strategies to maintain behavioral control and teach effectively.            Please join us for this timely, informative workshop. We know you are busy. Join us and we will make good use of your time. You can expect to return to your school with practical tools. And we know that, to be practical, management strategies have to be cost effective in terms of time so Dr. Holzer will stress effective brief intervention techniques in day-to-day behavior management. Over 97% of our participants say this program “met†or “exceeded†expectations. Cost: $165/person  DISCOUNTS: Small group discounts are as follows. If no one at your child's school can quite explain how the material is being adapted, chances are you're not getting best practices. One way in which many schools have made inclusion work is by using " differentiated instruction, " which takes a topic and brings it to students on a number of different levels in ways that are meaningful and legitimately instructional. If you've felt that teachers are just " dumbing the work down " for your child, doing the work for your child, or keeping you quiet through " mercy grading, " learn more about differentiated instruction in an excerpt from the book The Teacher's Guide to Inclusive Education, and if it doesn't sound like what your child is getting, introduce the concept. http://specialchildren.about.com/od/inclusion/a/differentiated.htm----------------------------------------------- Book: Using Music to Teach Children with Sensory Processing Disorderhttp://www.asperger.net/bookstore_9735.htm ------------------------------------------------ Find Support: Partnered and AutisticAre you an autistic adult who's married or partnered?
