January, 2010

Autism Couple of the Year

In 2002 our Executive Director Ed Arranga cofounded AutismOne. His motivation: the shocking news that his son was afflicted with autism. From very early on his wife-to-be Teri served as a volunteer taking over management of AutismOne Radio. Over time their mutual interest of serving the autism community expanded to a mutual and loving interest in each other. Three plus years ago they "merged" their two single-parent families into one happy family. Ed brought his son Jarad and Teri her son Ian (both autistic) forming the family of four. They've dedicated their lives to our "war' on autism.

The Age of Autism (daily web newspaper of the autism epidemic) recently recognized their contribution by naming them the Age of Autism Award Couple of the Year. Read the award announcement then scroll down and read the congratulations from members of our community.

Hi Pattison, We at AutismOne send our warmest wishes for the new millennium. The 2000 decade saw amazing strides in raising awareness of the autism epidemic. These strides set the basis for a giant leap forward during the 2010 decade. We expect to see a solid understanding of this terrible affliction thereby leading to prevention and cures.

Newsletter Help We feel our monthly newsletter is an important element of maintaining contact with each of our members. Obviously, we want to make this missive as interesting as possible. If you have an interest in being involved with newsletter preparation please contact the editor.

The Autism Collaboration

The Autism Collaboration (www.autism.org) serves a vital function by bringing together many of the most influential organizations so that they can plan and work together. The combined experience of the Collaboration's members exceeds 100 years. In other words, the Collaboration is your most knowledgeable resource providing research, education, training, and advocacy for affected individuals and their families.

The programs each member organization offers are broad and deep. Some like NAA provide direct support in helping families while others like SafeMinds and ARI are instrumental in funding the best scientific studies. AutismOne provides education and training to parents and professionals and recently launched the Birt Legal Center and will soon be launching Student Scholars for Action.

If you represent an organization that would like to join the Collaboration or a parent who wants to learn more we urge you to investigate the Collaboration and the work we do to appreciate the possibilities of hope and recovery. Our children get better. That is the message and mission of the Collaboration.

Monthly Highlights

AutismOne strives to provide you quality viewing and reading content. With so many excellent postings it is always difficult to feature any one over the others. But we do our best and point you to the following that caught our attention.

Article. A very touching and inspiring story of a mother who would not permit her "condemned" son to die and his belief in her.

Video. This is a presentation from the AutismOne 2009 conference. It addresses finding a balance after learning of "the" diagnosis of your child.

Blog. This is a very nice metaphor speaking of relationships in terms of caring for a garden.
