Guest guest
I have no experience using Abilify, but it is a newer atypical antipsychotic -- not an anti anxiety medication. It seems like a bit of overkill to me to use for short term anxiety, like you might encounter on a plane ride. I also don't know how quickly this medication works. My son's psychiatrist has prescribed extra Clonidine for us to use in such situations. Clondine -- actually classified as a antihypertensive -- works by decreasing noradrenaline in the brain and is moderately sedating. It takes effect within 30 minutes and one dose lasts about 4 hours. It has been safely used for years on children. Jody
Guest guest
RE: Abilify......one thing you should be aware of, Abilify (aripiprazole) can be very activating, which could present a problem if you are dealing with hyperactivety or aggression. Guest guest
I'm surprised your doc would suggest this. It sounds more like an anxiety or oppositional thing than a psychotic thing (abilify is an antipsychotic). Something that encourages sedation, compliance and calmness might be more helpful. I think this is a good one to talk to your health plan doc about at some length since there are vast numbers of choices and it depends a LOT on WHY he doesn't want to get on the plane. Guest guest
Why does your DAN Dr. want to place your son on Abilify? What symptoms are you looking to control? Abilify (aripiprazole) may be " activating " meaning it could be over-stimulating for some individuals. JR

Guest guest
We've tried Abilify, Geodone, and Risperdal, which I believe have similar modes of action. They caused a lot of problems. Seizures, precipitous weight gain, extreme paranoia. We do know kids that the meds help, but ours was not among them. As odd as it may seem, we found that our daughter gets overgrowths of yeast in her gut, and treating that helped her aggression. Hasn't eradicated the aggression, but giving her an anti-fungal helps a lot more than the psychotropic meds for us. Carol In a message dated 1/6/2010 7:06:11 P.M. Guest guest
We found out about the yeast when our daughter had stool cultures prior to scoping. (We had always suspected that she had GI issues because she would have terrible tantrums within an hour of eating-) If you have a sympathetic doctor that would write for the cultures, it should be covered by insurance, as they are considered medical issues. (At different times, both CIGNA and US Healthcare covered it.) I wish that I could comment on the meds for concentration, but in the hierarchy of needs, that's one that we'd like to work on, but just can't for now. But Tegretol has helped to even out our daughter 's moods for about 6 years now, without too much in the way of side effects. The odd thing is that the older meds in the classifications tended to help more than the newer ones. And you are right about some of the side effects of the psychotropics being permanent, we especially had that serious problem with Risperdal. For instance, while the distal tremors stopped after we stopped the med, the arm posturing and some other symptoms never abated. Wish we knew why these meds work so well for some and cause serious issues in others. In a message dated 1/8/2010 8:14:28 A.M. Guest guest
Our 7 yr old son Kiernan has been on Abilify for about a year and a half now.. he was previously on Risperdal... both have had impacts on his weight.. but that has been the only negative for us with the Abilify.. Since being on the medication it has helped with his focus in school, he went from using what I call caveman speak to full sentences in about 3 weeks since he was able to focus so much more in his therapies and classes.. it has calmed his moods and his helped him sleep through the night.. without the meds he is overly disruptive in school, can't sit for more than 30 seconds at a time, is aggressive at home with us and his sister, and would sleep for 2-3 hours a night.. His doctors have monitored him closely on the med starting at the lowest dose and even then he is only on 10mg which we give him at night prior to bed... they have had his blood checked on a regular basis and we follow up every few weeks with his doctors... Hope that helps! J Brook Park > > Does anyone have any experience with this medication? My son is almost 8 years old and we are having a lot of anger and violence issues. Guest guest
Thank you for the best answer. That is the advice I would give anyone in my shoes. But I have had him with homeopathy for 13 years now and it has made a huge difference in our lives. I think he would have been institutionalized (or maybe I would have been) if it were not for the help of homeopathy. But it is not a total cure for everything, I still have major anger issues. He is developmentally delayed and does not process information well. He is also somewhat paranoid. But I do thank you for your thought. After the psychiatrist on Wed we went to the Homeopath on Thurs. But I was wondering if abilify had been used by anyone to good effect. Guest guest
My husband started on Abilify for an additional depression medication (doctors samples) last June. Within 3 weeks he was a completely and I mean a completely different person. Kids or myself had not seen him so happy ever. The night before we were to leave town for a week I dropped off the actual prescription to be filled only to find out that we need authorization from insurance etc.. Long story short, we couldn't get if filled before leaving town so he ended up going without it for a week and within a couple weeks he wasn't doing well and has never regained it back. Not sure why. If he responds to it like my husband did originally he would be a whole new person it was an amazing difference but not sure why it hasn't worked like that since. Good Luck.
