Bass and drums pound out the beat in perfect unison. Bodies spring to their feet and rush the stage: jumping, dancing and bouncing off each other like bumper cars. The concertgoers behave like children. Which is no surprise because they are children, participating in the kiddie mosh pit found at nearly every concert. is truly one of the all-stars of the indie family music scene. He logs thousands of miles on the road each year, leading some to call him the hardest working man in children¹s show business. With national awards and recognition and a devoted fan base, and his wonderfully named band mates “The Not Ready for Naptime Players†dish out unexpectedly intelligent and whimsically rocking music for kids and their parents. ’s latest CD, Pop Fly, is filled with eleven high energy pop hits spanning topics from a dandelion watching ballplayer to a girl’s unusual hairstyle in which funky characters of all shapes and sizes take up residence. There are images of permission slips, first days, and grandmother’s home cooking. Gently plucked piano strings, vintage synthesizers, tender trombones, pounding drums, and giant electric guitars emerge on this journey through the pop flies and pratfalls of childhood. It’s yet another home run filled with witty lyrics, sing-along choruses and touching insights. It continues a hot streak that started in the early 90s. Autism is a neurological disorder that now affects 1 in 100 children in the United States, a recent rapid increase. It affects boys more often than girls, with 1 in every 58 boys diagnosed today with an autism spectrum disorder. Autism may impair a child's communication and social skills as well as his or her behaviors. The degree of impairment can range widely and based on the severity of the symptoms a person diagnosed with autism may need a variety of essential services such as specialized instruction, tutoring, social skills training, behavioral intervention and therapy, speech, occupational, physical or music therapies, medical consultations and testing to reveal underlying medical conditions such as seizures, gastrointestinal problems, immunological issues or allergies. Most of the time these services are not covered by private health plans and the families affected face the enormous challenge of providing help to their loved one(s) on their own. Early intervention has been shown to decrease the severity of symptoms in most individuals with autism. It is of utmost importance to us to make every effort to advocate for these families and children and help them obtain services. To learn more about autism please visit www.autismnortheastohio.org.
