Guest guest
Next Sunday our church is observing Autism Sunday... I've been asked to speak again, but I wanted to include other experiences than my own.. so .. if you have responses to any of the following questions that you wouldn't mind me sharing.. please respond back . either on this board.. or to my email .. Thank you so much!!! J Question 1 What is it that you wish other people knew/understood about your child? What has been the biggest things you've had to overcome since your child was first diagnosed? Can you tell me about a time that was most difficult for you to deal with your child with other people not understanding the situation around? example of this.. for me.. it would be Christmas of 2008.. We had to go shopping at Walmart.. at Christmas time.. of course we only had enough money for the things we needed and our son felt he should be getting a toy... Kiernan is obsessed with the Tank Engine and he had a total meltdown in the store.. one of the ways we handle some of these is to sit and hold him in a tight hold.. that sensory pressure that will calm him some.. so in the middle of the store.. i'm sitting on the floor holding my screaming son who is throwing his body all over the place.. trying to calm him down... of course comments from others did not go unnoticed.. the looks.. as I'm there crying and trying to calm this child.. as frustrated as I was.. I blurted out " have you never seen a child with autism have a meltdown " I finally got him calmed enough to get him to the car.. but I think that was the most difficult time I've ever had with him... What is the greatest joy you have with your child? What has having a child that is different than the norm taught you? Any other comments or stories please feel free to send!! Thank you!
