"Good news about autism"

Please join us for our monthly Frontiers in Biological Sciences lecture: “Good news about autismâ€

Presented by Dr. Raff, MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology University College London, London, UK

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

4:00 p.m.

School of Medicine, Room E501

Reception immediately following lecture in SOM E739

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are common. From being the least understood of the neuropsychiatric disorders, they are now arguably the best understood, largely through recent advances in identifying genes that predispose to these disorders and through studies of mouse models of ASDs. There is increasing evidence that, in many cases at least, the underlying problem is at synapses, where nerve cells make functional connections with one another. Remarkably, in several of the mouse models, correcting the problem in the adult brain with drugs or genetic manipulations reverses many of the behavioral and neurological abnormalities, providing hope for the development of therapies for ASDs. I will review some of these recent developments and discuss possible ways forward.

Is your school ready for the increase of students with autism spectrum disorders?

Date: November 10, 2009

Time: 1:00 pm ET/ 2:00 pm PT

Duration: 1 hour (15 minutes for Q & A)

Autism-related challenges are growing exponentially, but there are ways to cope. Join the experts in this webinar to find out the key steps you must take right now to (a) help these students, (B) protect your assets, and © preserve your general curriculum.

Register Now!

In early October, a national report released in the journal Pediatrics revealed that 1 percent of US children ages 3-17 have an autism spectrum disorder, an estimated prevalence of 1 in every 91 children. This is a dramatic increase from the one in 150 prevalence rates currently reported. Given the deluge of students diagnosed within the autism spectrum, states and schools are struggling to make sense of this and come up with best-practice standards & programs.

Some of the challenges faced by schools are:

Autism spectrum’s broad range

The diversity and complexity of individual needs

No “one-size-fits-all†approach

Handling academically brilliant students with social and communication barriers

And much more

This webinar has been designed to help educators understand how this influx of children with autism will affect schools and every general education classroom across the U.S. Webinar Speakers: Custer

Henry County School District, GA

Duncan-Chapman
