Schedule:

8:55 a.m. Welcome and Introductions by Judith C. Saltzman, Seminar Chair

9:00 a.m. Contours of an Appropriate Evaluation – The Professional Perspective by Barry, Ph. D. - Division of Behavioral Pediatrics, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital

Dr. Barry will discuss neuropsychological and educational evaluations for children and briefly define diagnostic criteria for specific learning disabilities, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders.

10:00 a.m. The Legal Right to Appropriate and Timely Evaluation and Independent Evaluation by Judith C. Saltzman, Esq. Hickman and Lowder Co. LPA

Attorney Saltzman will address the significance of evaluation in the special education process and discuss remedies where schools either refuse to evaluate or provide inappropriate evaluations.

10:30 a.m. Break

10:45 a.m. Extended School Year Services by lin J. Hickman, Esq. Hickman and Lowder Co. LPA

Attorney Hickman will compare and contrast federal and state requirements for extended school years services and address advocacy issues for children who need ESY.

11:30 a.m. Lunch (included)

12:00 p.m. The Intersection of IDEA, School Discipline, and Juvenile Court:What to do when your disabled child is suspended, transferred or expelled.By Myers, Esq.

12:30 p.m. Group Remedies by Kerry M. Agins, Esq., Siegel & Agins Co., LPAParents are increasingly banding together to improve special education services in their school districts. Attorney Agins will moderate a panel of parents from various school districts and provide the legal context of individual and group action to obtain services for children with disabilities.

1:45 p.m. Transition Law By Aimee Gilman, Esq. Transition services are supposed to prepare children with disabilities to achieve their post-secondary goals.

Attorney Gilman will discuss legal requirements of transition plans and also address practical issues such as integrating transition goals with IEP goals and involving outside agencies in the development of transition plans.

2:45 p.m. Break

3:00 p.m. Advocacy Before the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, presented by Calvin s, Disability Rights Advocate Ronda Cress, Esq., Staff Attorney, Ohio Legal Rights Services

After special education comes BVR, or does it? Mr. s will discuss pre-hearing advocacy before the BVR, and Attorney Cress will discuss the BVR hearing process.

CANCELLATIONS must be received in writing three business days prior to the program. Refunds are charged a $15 administrative fee. Transfers or substitutions to other programs are permitted with 24 hours written notice. (Transfer is to a single program and the funds may be transferred only once!)
