-Elie gained over 40 lbs on Risperdal in 2 years. Then we switched to

Seroquel. He has gained 10 lbs on it! Chubby???? Try 172 lbs on a 4'10 "

frame! We are now FORCING exercise even if it has to be rewarded by a snack

(And I did not start this food reward crap - it was school even though I

have objected for years and have been ignored.) We are working on sweet

tasting but low calorie, high fiber foods. Raisens - tiny boxes, 2 tiny

slivers of a low fat Amish bread I make or banana bread. Fruit and veggies

won;t do because I can't get him to eat them except as part of a full meal.

We have also made our plates at table smaller and take 2 very samll servings

instead of one or two large servings. Fruit juice is now down to a 4 ounce

glass - there are 110 calories in 8 ounces of OJ and I have seen my son

drink a quart at a sitting. Since ice water only goes so far, we are

keeping diet root beer in his diet - no caffaine no sugar but lots of

chemicals!!!

Joan any other ideas for sweet sancks?? Oh yes - the whole family is

working on food control - not just Elie although he is the catalyst.

you're on the right track. What about dried pineapple? Very sweet and not

as sticky as raisins, but chewy so it takes longer.

Do the snacks *have* to be sweet? (I know you didn't teach this....) Will

he find it as rewarding if it's something like a special jerky? Andy likes

sugar pea pods. Woudl that work? Let me know if it's a taste or a sensory

thing that drives the meaning of the reward.

Hi Sara,

I have a chubby too. I bought a child's exercise tape that we do together. I

make it a fun time and it has seemed to help. Zeb lost 3 lbs. this past

month. They have quite a few of these tapes out now I have Chicken Fat. I

think it is a little stupid but Zeb loves it.

(16 yrs old) put on 4o lbs in the past 1 1/2 yrs and still gaining.

He was on Luvox for a year and then we tried switching him to Prozac

(supposed to have weight loss) but he developed one of those rashes. The

Neurontin was an interim med while he was getting off the SSRI and he

consistently kept gaining. Now he is getting off the Neurontin and on

Cylexia (back to our old boy self) but each visit to the doc, he puts on 3

lb.. Fortunately he is is 5'8 " but still looking chunky and growing out of

the new wardrobe. The funny thing is that he hasn't increased his diet and

we try to get him moving with skiing, swimming and recently hooked him up

with a personal trainer at the gym for weekly work outs.... and he just keeps

growing out (height has stopped) ..... It is very disconcerting and I am

fearful he will never stop!

I found an interesting tid bit about wieght gain and

diabetes type 2 in children. Especially in children

who are genetically predisposed for it( and nathan is

big time on both sides of the family) They found that

thsese children often starting as early as 10yrs of

age have a high amount of insuling being pumped into

their system thus persistant hunger and then ofcaurse

eating to satisfy hunger and more insulin being pumped

and then the weight gain starts (instead of the usual

noted weight loss seen in diabetics)and often thses

children and up are sedentry and we try to get nathan

to exercise and have goals for certain amount of

exercise and types for him too, but nathan often

refuses or sits down after just a few minutes. He is

not usuallly winded that weve noted, i dont know if it

hurts his hips (hyperextention and all) or what the

deal is. nathan's PED has refered him to see an

endocrinologist at UIHC when we are there next month,

his fasting blood sugars remain 100-110 even after

12hours of fasting. And nathan's dietician in UIHC

also emailed me some reccommendations with calorie

counting, diary keeping and other behavior management

type of things plus food options to try with him(she

is very nice and understanding) and were suppose to be

getting an email or phone call from his

behaviormangement team guy for any other possible

things to try for the possible behavior parts of this

eating frenzy becoming soo bad. shawna

Hi Sara,

If you put the tapes on for yourself and he happened to just watch you he

may eventually join you. It's worth a try.

We bought a treadmill last year for the family...mainly for Gene....he liked

walking on Grandma's. But a year has gone by and I can't get him on ours!!

I remember our pediatrician telling us to have Gene work up to a sweat three

times a week!!!! What a laugh...I just looked at her skeptically. When he

gets the least bit tired he just sits down!!!

Hi Sara,

I guess you won't try uses those tapes againLOL. Zeb can get possesive about

his movie tapes but I think he likes me to exercise with him because he likes

to laugh at me. I must really put on a show for him.Would Ellie dance with

you? If he likes it dance tapes are another idea.

-3.

Additional note: My husband and I both use the tapes but

when Elie finds that we are using them, he tries to take them out of the

VCR, becomes " unruly " and tries to stop us from exercising. This is his

private fetish and we better not horn in on it. But thanks for the

suggestions!!
