Guest guest
Hi everyone - this is a long post, We will be starting the ASP as of January 1, 2010 and it was highly recommended that I join this listing. We are in Medina County/Medina City and would love to speak with anyone in this area to ask about the process and who they use as providers. My son, has adaptive PE, adaptive Music and adaptive Art in his current IEP. He has many physical, medical and cognitive complications. I do not quite understand how the curriculum gets set up. uses specific programs and has assistive technology at school (that are listed in his IEP) like Touch Math, Keyboarding program, small sized mouse, Edmark, special pencils, etc. We want to continue to use these, but have been told that we need to have someone with a Masters in Education evaluate him and make his curriculum. Do I get any say in what we want to continue with?? Also, we want a tutor 3 times a week to come to our home for 3 hours each visit. Does anyone have suggestions as to who they use and if it is possible to work with a company to hire someone we have used before that works great with and knows the programs we already use? Do you guys hook up with homeschoolers to keep the social skills and outside activities going? Are the homeschooler groups receptive to our kids and their needs? For the social skills, adaptive PE, adaptive Music (music & movement) I've had meetings with a great company here in Medina - the Asian Martial Arts and the owner is in the process of becoming a provider. He already has a Therapeutic Martial Arts class for adults with developmental disabilities (I watch and was so neat) and he is very interested in doing children/teen's Therapeutic (adaptive) classes of not only Martial Arts, but also Yoga, Tia Chi and Dance if the community interest is there. Asian Martial Arts just hired a Clinical Psychiatrist for the ASP requirement to be a provider) and is checking into whether he will also at a PT to review the kids' abilities. He also has the paperwork for applying as an Autism Scholarship Provider and during our meetings called ODE to ask questions. He has started the process. I know this will help with those goals for social skills, auditory learning (following directions), balance & movement, etc. Anyway the owner of Asian Martial Arts is wanting to know community interest for ASP kids and homeschoolers to be able to set the classes during the day (before 5:00pm) If anyone is interested in any of the above classes please let him know. The contact information for this company is: http://www.asianma.com/ (click on Therapeutic on the left side) Sensei Jeff Burlingame 330-721-9695 I really want to be involved but don't want private classes because that defeats the social skills aspect of it. If you are willing to talk about how you manage the ASP and help me out please just give me a call 330/723-0004 or privately email me at betternow2@... Thanks for any help you can provide. Take care, Vickie Fetsko
