NEW TO AUTISM? NEED SUPPORT? LOCAL AUTISM EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES RECALLS SURVEYS IMPORTANT REQUEST - CHILD WITH ASD IN NEED OF A FOSTER FAMILY A lovely 15 year old girl with ASD is in need to find a foster family. She currently resides at the Monarch Boarding Academy because her mom, her only family, is terminaly ill. She has noone else to care for her so she will need a good foster family. Monarch School will provide maximum support to the foster family that is interested in opening their home and hearts to her. Please contact Debra Mandell at mandelld@... if you are interested in fostering this child in need of a loving and supportive family, or if you know someone else who might. Feel free to distribute this important request widely. Thank you! Staggering New Data: Survey Shows 1 in 91 Children May Have Autism Spectrum DisorderAutism May Be More Common Than Thought: Survey Shows 1 in 91 Children May Have Autism Spectrum Disorder By Kathleen Doheny WebMD Health News Oct. 5, 2009 -- About 1% of U.S. children, or about one in 91, may have autism or an autism spectrum disorder, according to two new national surveys. The new estimate is a dramatic increase from the previously accepted number of one in 150. But experts who discussed the findings of the two new surveys - one released today and the othe r due out before year's end - urged caution in interpreting the new information about the developmental disorders. "It's important to know potential signs of ASD... Among the potential signs are social interaction problems, language difficulties, or behavior problems such as repetitive behavior." A new survey by the CDC found that about 1% of U.S. children are affected by an autism spectrum disorder, says Ileana Arias, PhD, deputy director of the CDC. No further details were available on the CDC survey, due to be released in full later this year. The same prevalence, however, was found in the survey released today, says D. Kogan, PhD, of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration. With his colleagues, Kogan drew on data from the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health, a telephone survey of parents jointly conducted by the Health Resources and Services Administration and the CDC. Join other families who speak out, volunteer and advocate for all of our kids! Every little bit helps - donate some of your time, fill our a survey, give $10, walk, go to benefit events, ask EVERYONE you know to support your cause because all of our future depends on it! Why? Because with these ever increasing numbers of children affected it is certain that our society will not be able to support costly autism services for 1 in 91 children or 1 in 58 little boys. All of us have to work together to halt this epidemic, devastating to our society and personal lives on so many levels! We have to demand that the cause(s) of the disorder are found! We have to demand insurance discrimination or individuals with ASD immediately ends so that many of the challenges of ASD can be overcome. We need to demand safe, sound, and more comprehensive supports in our schools and elswhere in the community as well as in our homes. There are numerous local and national autism organizations that work very hard to raise awareness and funds for research, to train and educate, to bring resources and funds to families affected by the disorder. Please take the time to learn about them and about what they do, join and support them at their events and fundraisers so they can accomplish more for the entire autism community! "What if you don’t walk this year? It’s just one year, right? Research released this week indicates that the prevalence of autism is now 1 in every 91 births....1 in every 58 boys. But it's just one year....The World Health Organization estimates that autism costs society approximately $35 billion each year…just one year. In the four years since Autism Speaks was founded, we have been able to go from start-up to the largest funder of autism research in the world by committing an unprecedented $130 million to science. It has been the hundreds of thousands of walkers in each community who have changed the future of those who struggle with autism by raising those funds. We need you to register to walk with us this year to keep the momentum going. While we are making strides in leveraging more research dollars through our grassroots advocacy initiatives, autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases. It is up to us, those of us who love someone affected by autism, to continue pushing the research advances forward. We can’t afford to sit this year out.
