Guest guest
I have 3 autistic sons, ages 12, 7 and 4. The 4 and 7 year old are nonverbal. I have a weird question. I have googled it a million times and came up with nothing. My 4 year old doesn't talk but when he gets angry or upset, he screams at his hand as if it were a person. He does the same thing when he's happy but does it with the opposite hand. Has anyone ever heard of anything remotely like this?
Guest guest
My son is nonverbal as well and does the same things with his hands, though I haven't really noticed if he changes hands. I will have to check that out. I have always taken it as some sort of a "stimming" behavior.
Guest guest
My son is verbal at 8 now. He did it a whole lot when he was younger (4 or 5)-we were told it was stimming. Now, he doesn't do it very much at all in public or at school. He sometimes will do it at home when he gets very excited. > > My son is nonverbal as well and does the same things with his hands, though I haven't really noticed if he changes hands. Guest guest
Hello,I have noticed "hand talking" before in a child I have worked with. I also suspect that this behavior could be linked to self-talk and coping strategies, which can be shaped into more functional communication.
