Does anyone use/know of a good amino acid supplement that can boost up some low urine amino acid results I've just had for both ds and dd? Thanks in advance, Janet

Thanks Ken, everything's low to be honest - across the board. My daughter is a really good eater and has protein several times a day and with snacks so it's a mal-absorption thing, her indicators show high on the malabsorption bars - she has plenty of enzymes to break down the food and acid to increase the stomach ph, so can't go any further there. I was thinkingof a protein drink but she can't have dairy and the hemp and pea protein ones are awful when i've tried them. This really depends on the profile. Genova can get compounded AA supps that are profile specific, but if there are only a few key anomalies on testing this is probably not the best route as they are relatively expensive, however if the profile is more complex this might be a good bet.Ken From: Janet proctor <Proctja@...> Sent:

Hi , Thanks - you're doing really well then as your dd is a veggie - my eldest daughter is also so I know how tricky it can be to get enough protein in them. The dd that has these low results eats really well and likes meat and has plenty so was surprised at her results, wouldn't have expected it - they're all so low. Do you know why the allergy research free aminos doesn't have the trytophan amino acid? - I think they've included something else on that pathway instead which might explain why it helps with sleep so dont know whether ok for use earlier in day, although it's saying between meals. Hi Janet,

No we just take them at night. During the day I try to ensure that my daughter is eating enough different proteins. She is vegetarian which is not ideal when you have low hormones and neurotransmitters. So, I try to use foods which have the full complement of essential amino acids. She is lucky in that she can tolerate whey powder. We used Nutriveda for a while, but, that got too expensive and we now use Solgar Whey to go powder which has L-Glutamine in as well as the free-form Branched Chain Amino Acids. She says that she feels better on this formula. There are lots of supps out there - Lamberts do lots of individual amino acids in case you want to add in L-glutamine from a non-dairy source. L-glutamine is good for healing the gut.

The ION test which Dr G did showed which amino acids she was short in and the gut permeability test showed that she had a marginal increase in permeability to PEG at molecular weight 374 - I don't know what the implications of this is!

Glad that you mentioned that the hemp and pea protein powders tasted awful - I was going to try those!

5HTP, as the intermediary between tryptophan and serotonin has an equivalent effect on serotonin and melatonin levels (if this is a primary deficiency and the intermediary enzymes function normally) but does not provide a source from which your body can derive the other (kynurenine) pathway compounds which are just as important for CNS function.Ken From: "m.kidson60@..." <m.kidson60@...> To:

Hi Janet,

Thanks - it is a bit of a struggle to get enough protein in to her. Also, she has had to relax her rules a bit as some supplements I can only get in a gelatine capsule or like the thyroid hormone they are an animal derivative. Luckily, she would rather feel better than not take them!

I don't know why Allergy Research don't have tryptophan in - they have put 5 htp in instead - this is what they say:

Allergy Research Free Aminos is a formulation of 17 naturally occurring amino acids in their free forms. It includes 9 essential amino acids, as well as 5-L-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). This formula does not contain L-tryptophan, 5-HTP is in the same metabolic pathway as L-tryptophan and is the immediate precursor to serotonin and melatonin.

This formulation is appropriate for food-sensitive individuals.

It is OK to take 5 htp during the day - but, I think that someone might feel a bit tired to start with if they are short in it to start with.

I'm not really sure why they help with sleep, I think that it is more than just the fact that they have 5 htp in. We were taking another brand before which didn't have 5 htp in and they improved sleep as well. I look alot on bodybuilding forums and they talk on there about taking Amino Acids at bedtime and about them helping with neurotransmitters and hormones.

By the way, my daughter takes 50mg iodine per day - I started her on a 12.5mg iodoral tablet and gradually increased by one tablet until we reached 50mg. The main thing that happened was that her thyroid gland swelled up for about a week when we reached 37.5mg - she complained of a lump in her throat. The gland went back down in size on it's own. This is a sign that the gland was short of iodine (according to the iodine group), she still needs thyroid medication, but, has more energy when taking the iodine
