, we live in the Twinsburg district and my son is in 2nd grade at Billiart.  I am not sure if the class is full or not but you can contact the principal, Jodi ston at 216-381-1191.  You can also email me offline and I can send you my phone number.  Today is an insane day but I would be able to chat better tomorrow.  We couldn't be happier with JB and love everything about the school.

Peace,Tara

How far is JB from Twinsburg? I live in Stow and it is not too close.

How are you ladies able to get your children to school and back?

There are families from Stow and Hudson that go to JB.  For me, it's about 30 minutes one way but luckily my husband works up that way so he does the morning drive and I do the afternoon.  We have families that come as far as Avon and Ashtabula County.  After care is available and morning drop off is flexible with clubs and study groups before school.

I know they serve many LD children very well, but not really autism. We did not have a good experience with JB. Our child had somewhat lower verbal skills, but verbal, cognitively normal, but moderately autistic. In my opinion, JB needs to understand autism more. Re: [ ] School help!

I am not very good at directions but it is by Uniontown. About 20 minutes south of Akron. Not sure if that helps.

I've only observed JB (son doesn't attend) but have observed 4 occasions or so during the last 2 years. They appear to be in a transition period. The first grade teachers last year (not sure if they are the same or not) rocked. The 2nd grade teacher was a nun which totally did NOT understand autism. It would have been a disaster with my son. The parents there appear to be very active and want the change. I think they have now paired with an OT. A couple of years ago there was a huge fiasco with the kindergarten teacher and a few years before that, the same major kind of blowup with one of the primary teachers. They need staff who have been specifically trained in autism. I'd love to know the percentage of kids who attend there that are on the scholarship. As of last year, the principal said they are

not trained to take children with "behaviors". This is a total cop out, b/c I'd say a vast majority of kids on the spectrum have some sort of behavioral issue. They should say, "We are not equipped to service children who are violent." It's my hope that this will develop into a solid program in the next several years, which I will credit all to the parents.I would recommend a tour of Monarch if your child is currently nonverbal. Good luck to you!

As far as I know, JB still does not have an OT, or mentioned considering one the last time we talked to them. My child had a bad day, hit a teacher once, and was kicked out.My kid is verbal. We did visit Monarch. It is an excellent center based program. Although they could take my child, Monarch felt my kid may be too high functioning for much of what they do, and may not be the best place for her. Re: [ ] School help!

I was just replying to the thread in general, not directly towards you, but for the person who said their child was nonverbal. They have an OT on their web site, but that was not the one mentioned to me by a couple of parents. TM--where is your child attending now and how are they doing?

Hi all,

Billiard is a good school for higher functioning kids. They are incapable of working with students that are more severe. We thought we would be able to send our son there, however once he became school age it became more apparent he was more severly cognitively disabled than his first indications. Consequently we suffered through two different schools before we were finally able to get him into the Cleveland Clinic Center for Autism. I understand Monarch is excellent as well.

Monarch has great programs for non-verbal students with autism especially their speech therapy. But when kids made certain progresses to move up to the next level, there were no typical peers to play with at school. If anyone would like to invest in more intensive direct therapies for a better return, Monarch is the one. My Child is non-verbal and she had made great progresses in communication at Monarch.

I just wanted to mention that not all schools can be all things to all kids, especially small and specialized schools like Billiart.  With a lower grade ratio of 2 teachers to no more than 12 kids and 2 teachers to 15 kids in the upper grades they cannot serve everyone.  The building is not a huge school.  Not all kids that go to JB are diagnosed with autism and the ones that are on the spectrum are mostly HFA/PDD/AS.  The other students have other learning difference such as ADHD, learning disabilities, etc and attend JB because they offer an environment that respects different learning styles.  It is not an exclusive " autism " school, just one that happens to have higher functioning students enrolled.

My son receives OT and his sensory needs are constantly met throughout the day at school.  He has " the nun " in second grade right now who is Sr. Sharon and we couldn't ask for a better member of our son's educational team.  I can honestly say that her email responses to me are faster than any teacher we've had in the past.  The other classroom teacher is young and enthusiastic and they compliment each other perfectly in the class.

Just as it is difficult to find an excellent school for any child on the spectrum such is the case for us with kiddos with AS.  They tend to fall through the cracks in the public schools and don't meet the criteria for other autism specific schools.  We are thankful to have found a place where our son is happy, successful, respected and embraced for his differences.  Just my 2cents. :)

Peace,Tara

Hi Tara

I agree with you JB is a fantastic school It has a specific population with specific criterion. They do great things for kids. Many of them came to a school where I use to teach and they were very successful. For those who have kids who are more severe other options are available.
