Does it help when he chooses what reward he's working for? How about moving the homework area? When my sons were younger, we'd move our area to a field or the park and make the work a part of the scene: parts of a flower, social systems of bugs under rocks - we'd alternate a page done at the table with a real life practical session:)

I know Summer has just begun--but this is my Summer to revamp, set up desks and homework space, etc. So, first of all, I'm open to any suggestions on how to set up a homework area -- in their bedrooms, an extra room, etc. Secondly, how do you get your ASD child to focus and do homework/review after school. has no desire to do homework, review, read, etc. When we start he complains he's tired, just scribbles, etc. Again,,,,open to any ideas/suggestions.

We are kind of going to be doing "summer school" here at our house, and a book I just purchased was very helpful-Sue 's Workbox System. It is designed for homeschoolers but is NOT a curriculum...just a way to get organized. You should also know that the author's son has ASD and she developed this system initially for him...it is loosely based on TEACCH, and pretty visual and the reward is that they see their work "disappearing" as they go...and it breaks down each task into different workboxes, which is a lot more manageable and easier for our kids to handle without it seeming so overwhelming. I plan on using it for homework during the school year, too. The idea is to help them become more independent. Jun 16, 2010 02:23:43 PM, wrote:

, we are pretty set in our ways with our after school routine which makes it predictable for Logan.  When we get home from school, he gets alone/free-time to decompress.  He can do whatever he chooses (within reason....lol) but he usually chooses a solitary activity like Wii or computer and a snack.  By then, dad comes home from work and we have together time and play.  Then we have dinner.  After dinner, he knows that when the dining room table is cleared, it is time to start homework.  We just do it at the table.  Some nights are harder than others but for the most part he is fine with it because he knows that we will have play time after homework is finished.  Having a set routine and sticking to it has helped us out so much.  We don't do homework in the bedroom.  The only " homework " we really do in there is nightly, before bed reading.
