My son is 8 and has . He has more cavities than any of my other 2. He

has never had a dentist visit ( since age 3) where he didn't have a cavity. 7

at once was the most. I had a lot of cavities as a kid though.

He had a pulpotomy and after 9 mos it infected and had to be pulled. My

dentist said 9 mos was a long time for it to last-most infect sooner. I didn't

use an oral surgeon, just their regular dentist.

He did have to have a metal appliance, called a space retainer, put in to

keep the space open so his teeth wouldn't shift. ( a painless procedure--it

gets glued in--after they make a mold of the tooth area)

.

a dentist told us that kids who take a lot of antibiotics get significant

amounts of cavities because the sugar levels are extremely high in penicillin

syrups and especially when dosing at night before bedtime, the teeth get coated

with the syrup and bacteria thrive on and in-between the teeth. can't help you

with the rest of your questions, but if you doctor was prescribing a lot of

penicilling for your child's episodes, it might explain why he has what he has

in terms of his cavities.

My mother is a dental hygienist and indicated that taking any of the

children medicine with added sugars (Motrin, Tylenol, antibiotics,

etc.), especially at night, lets the bacteria thrive (just as Nick

indicated in his posting). We try to give her medicine and then have

her drink water afterwards if it is late at night. The other issue is

drinking lots of juice throughout the day while they are fevering.

The fevers themselves shouldn't be the problem, but all of the sugar in

the medicines and drinks that sits on their teeth can be a real issue

for causing cavities.
