Wow - what a horrifying experience for that poor

family! The idea of stressing a child with autism to

the point where he develops PTS syndrome is heart

wrenching. We have been very lucky with our home based

ABA therapy. The therapists are EXTREMELY positive to

the point where it becomes a daily 2 hour praise

session. Luca loves it (usually :-)). I think this

story shows 2 things 1) the quality of the therapists

and the service provider make a huge difference and 2)

no one treatment, even if performed correctly, is

right for every child. There is no one " correct "

cookie-cutter approach that fits all kids with ASDs.

Dan, father of Luca (whose bus just pulled up...) >>

Dan,

We have had an in-home program for for several years. I think there are

some ways to prevent mistreatment of our children in any setting. First,

educate ourselves on the techniques and philosophies used. Be direct about

what is acceptable and unacceptable in the treatment of your child. Second,

monitor sessions. Third, involve yourself in the planning and programming. Of

the five kids that our senior therapist works with I'm the only parent that

is home for all sessions and the only one that attends the weekly team

meetings. The senior and I are a team in planning and addressing my son's

behavior needs. Together we lead the team. She can't do it alone since she

isn't here for every session.

Of course there are no guarantees but we need to be confident that we know

our child best and trust our gut as to what is right and wrong for our

children.

OK, off my soapbox.

Speaking of ABA, are there any ABA, DST, Lovass, Carbonne style, CARRS,

or what ever tutors in the Austin area who would like to work with our

mild mannered very compliant 9 year old that just loves to work and read?

We need 4 hours a day for 7 days a week for at least September and mabe

October and beyond...

any part or all of these hours, one to twenty-eight hours a week will

help. You can follow our establised program or use your own. It pays

$10.00 per hour.

We have been through many " designers " and many different " providers " -

they are both important- but I think the " designer " is crucial- look

Hi All,

Is there a big difference in who designs and moniters the ABA program

or is the quality mostly dependant upon the therapists working with

my child? or both? If anyone has recommendations for me that would be

a great help. Thanks, CA

Having some who oversees the program who is qualified to do so and who also knows your child is very important. The program needs to be customized to your child and not a blanket programs that is given to all children.

The consultant needs to have an extensive experience and knowledge with working with children on the autism spectrum ( all levels).

We did an ABA program and I would love to talk to you about it.

Feel free to email me at hcf67@...

It is both. Please please please make sure that the

people running your ABA programs are Board Certified

and can explain to you why they run the programs they

are running. How will it help your child in the long

run. There are lots of people in Georgia who say they

are consultants but are not certified. Not quite sure

where they are getting the training but from being a

therapist themselves. That is not grounds for running

and implementing a childs' program. Little more

technical than that.

Just my .02 cents from experience.

There are good professionals with lots of educational experience that are not board certified as well. I have run into several BCBA's that have no clue about educational development only behavioral modification. You need to consider this as well. There is more to learning and educating then just behaviors!

Jim, I am not sure what ABA services you are looking for, but wanted

to let you know that we have availability in our home consultation program. We

are a new company, but we are not new to the field of ABA. We offer a variety of home based

services provided by excellently trained therapists who are all supervised by

PhD, BCBA consultants.

Please feel free to contact me off the list if you would

like additional information regarding our services. We will also be attending

the ASA conference this weekend and would welcome meeting you to discuss

further if you will be attending.

Good Luck,

I **DO NOT** recommend Learning Repetoire in Pearland.  The management is

horrible.

We switched to The Shape of Behavior and it has made a huge difference with my

son.

I have heard from some other dissatified parents who had their kids at Learning

Rep as well.

It is worth the longer drive to The Shape of Behavior, IMO.

-My daughter goes to the Learning Repertoire in Clear Lake and she

has made TREMENDOUS progress with their help. We have no problems

with the management.

I don't know how much the Shape of Behavior is, but when I

looked into that place I could not afford it. Learning Repertoire

is 40-45$/hour and the owner will help you file with insurance.

I have heard from several dissatisfied parents in all schools,

therapy centers and in life in general. I would reccomend visiting

the centers yourself and making your own decision.

If I had listened to all the " dissatisfied " parents regarding autism

treatment/therapy I might never have tried any intervention at all!

We pay between £10-16 per hour, but it all depends on their experience. I know some people pay less.On 14 Sep 2010, at 11:19, Danny wrote:

Hi, I got an ABA therapist who works with my son and she is the best I would say. she charges £25. per hour and she has 12 years of experience. There is no nonsense with her. she has also written a book on the ABA method of teaching at home. It's called AUTISM THE WAY FORWARD. It sold by karnac books. Have a look.DS

good afternoon everyone,

im a long term lurker and first time poster!

my daughter (kayla) is autistic and 5 in july. she is more or less non verbal

apart from the odd word here and there.

she was diagnosed at the age of about 2.5 and since then it has just been a

total rollercoaster. Initially, after researching the internet we took her off

milk and glueten and she improved pretty much straight away, but then she

plateaued. We took her to see jean muscroft but we have really struggled to

implement the correct diet as she is unbelievably picky. she eats gf fruit loaf

from tescos with vitalite, genius bread with vitalite, gf choc biscuits from

asda, gf pizzas from asda and innocent smoothies. All of which we know are not

'correct' but are the nearest to it that she will eat. we started aba 12 months

ago, where an aba instructor would come up to liverpool (where we live) and

teach kaylas mum and 2 volunteers we have helping us. As a result kayla is

slowly picking up things and can say things like 'i want buscuit' but she is

still struggling in a lot of areas. it is proving difficult to carry out these

sessions and what we basically need is someone who is qualified in aba (or

something similar) who we can pay to spend 2 or 3 days a week with kayla in

school 1 to 1. the current company we use will not budge on their £72 an hour

plus expenses and accomodation so we are looking for someone nearer liverpool

who would accept less that that hourly rate and would not need accomodation. Can

anyone reccommend someone? we are eventually trying to get the council to fund

someone in the school full time (forgotten what this is called), i also need

advice on this as well! but we are prepared to pay in the meantime. sorry for

the long post! and it is an education listening to some of you parents on here,

thanks

Danny
