with Autism and Other Special Needs

An empowering night for families caring for children with autism and other special needs

Please join us as the National Autism Association – Northeast Ohio (NAA NEO), partnering with Ken Vinikoff, of The Financial Group, present a free educational seminar to families of individuals with special needs.

1. Learn about the role of the Support Administrator in supporting individuals and families of persons with Developmental Disabilities. Hear Jeff Mackey speak about advocacy, and how to enhance one’s chance at success.

2. Learn about the Tools for Today and Tomorrow program and take a tour of selected resources that are available through the Tools website (by Kresnye).

3. Ken Vinikoff will help you learn how to prepare for the financial well being of your loved ones withspecial needs loved ones. Discuss issues such as: Letters of Intent, Special Needs Trusts, Protecting Assets and Government Benefits. The Financial Group, together with the NAA-NEO, looks forward to an evening of education and resources for special needs families.

Presenters and Summaries: MackeyCuyahoga County Board of Developmental DisabilitiesJeff Mackey will speak on the role of the Support Administrator in supporting individuals and families of persons with Developmental Disabilities. I would also like to speak on the practice of advocacy, and how to enhance ones chance at success. Mr. Mackey is a family member and guardian for a person with substantial challenges as a result of a developmental disability. He has worked to support persons with disabilities since 1976 when he began his career as a personal care staff member in a large Intermediate Care Facility for the Mentally Retarded in Lake County. During the following thirty plus years he has worked with children and adults with a wide variety of

disabilities. He has supported persons with disabilities to obtain services in a wide variety of places and secured funding from many different sources. He has worked for the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the State of Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission, and the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities. He has a BS in Education Specializing in Special Education, and a Masters Degree in Public Administration.

Mr. Mackey will be sharing information on the Service and Support Administrative Services of the Board of Developmental Disabilities. In particular the conversation will center on reviewing the role of the SA to an individual and family, and tips on working well with your SA as point of accountability for the individual with DD agreed upon needs and services. Mr. Mackey will also share his perspective on advocacy. He will discuss the history of our system of services at it relates to advocacy and offer suggestions for today’s advocates to consider into the future give the challenges of our time.

Presenters and Summaries: KresnyeTools for Today and Tomorrow Kresnye will give a brief overview of the Tools program and then a tour of selected resources that are on the Tools website. Kresnye joined the Mc House of Cleveland, Inc. (RMH), in September, 2006, as the Tools for Today and Tomorrow Program Manager. She is responsible for supporting the activities of the Tools for Today and Tomorrow Consortium, including identifying supportive services and referral sources, researching and managing content for the Tools website, planning and coordinating workshops and conferences, grant writing/management, securing donations, community outreach, preparing an annual Tools budget, and

reporting evaluation data. Before joining RMH, she was the MIS Director for Recovery Resources, a non-profit organization based in Cleveland, Ohio, devoted to helping people with mental illness, alcoholism, drug and other addictions. There she was responsible for managing IT implementation projects and the development of infrastructure for efficient and effective management of information; developing, monitoring and evaluating policy and procedure; supervising IT staff; budgeting; acquisitions; help desk; and training. Prior to that, was Project Coordinator, at Case Western Reserve University, University Alzheimer Center, for qualitative and quantitative research studies involving caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Presenters and Summaries: Ken Vinikoff Financial Group

Ken Vinikoff joined Skylight Financial Group in July of 2006 and is Certified as a Special Care Planner. He is a founding member of the Financial Group, the Special Needs division of Skylight Financial Group. The Financial Group’s mission is to help individuals who have Special Needs and their families. Ken is a Board Member of the Upside of Downs and he is an active volunteer with the Autism Society of Greater Cleveland. He is also an active volunteer for Autism Speaks, serving on the planning committees for the 2008 and 2009 “Rock til it Stops†Concerts as well as the 2008 and 2009 “Walk Now for Autism†events.
