Guest guest
Hi , The doctor will test for the genotype. I'm 1a, the most common in North America & the hardest to get rid of. I tried tx(treatment) twice but did not respond. That was in 1991 & in 1994 though & the tx now is much better, more than 50% clear the virus. As for having only 5 years to live - your bf's doctor is an ass! You can't even tell how much (if any) damage has been done without extensive testing or at least a biopsy. Has he had a biopsy? If not, it's time to find another doctor. Many docs have no idea what HCV is or how it's treated. Is this your bf's family doc that told him that? Get a referral to a specialist - a hepatologist or gastroenterologist - they're the ones who deal with HCv most. My doctor is an infectious diseases specialist. Tell him I've had it since 1969. I'm still here & kicking dragon butt. Most of us have had it 5+ years. Being HCV+ is NOT a death sentence, even having cirrhosis isn't! I was dx'd(diagnosed) with cirrhosis with my first biopsy in 1991. A few things he should do are DON'T drink alcohol, get plenty of rest & avoid acetaminophenen (Tylenol) it can be toxic to the liver. SuZie Save the Earth - it's the only planet with CHOCOLATE!
