About the Smile Summer Camp:

For many youngsters, summer means summer camp with all its many pleasures of childhood: Playing games, making friends, and having plenty of smiles to go around. But hundreds of kids rarely get to make new friends or play the childhood games we take for granted.

The therapeutic program was developed for children with disabilities out of a need to provide them with a fun, interactive way to further develop their social skills and to help these kids have a better summer – and a better life.

Space is limited to only 5 children per week. The ratio will be 5 children with two adults. Reserve your child's place with a $100 deposit that will be credited towards your child's tuition.

Monarch Schools' Summer Social Language Program

The 2010 Monarch Summer Social Language Program, which will take place June 21 – July 23, is a 5-week summer program located at Monarch School in Shaker Heights, for children and teenagers, ages 6-18, with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

At Monarch Summer Social Language Program, our goal is for children to have fun. We emphasize building social and communication skills through a highly engaging curriculum which utilizes written and visual supports, in a therapeutic and recreational environment. All activities are presented as traditional camp activities including: sports/group games, arts and crafts, music/art therapy, swimming and drama. The program’s inclusion of typical peer models assists with skill development. The result is a fun-filled experience where children gain self-confidence while creating lasting friendships.

IEP-Driven Program

All of our activities are designed to coordinate with the children’s Individual Educational Program (IEP) – while the kids are having fun, we continue to teach.

Low Child-to-Staff Ratio

We purposely limit the number of attendees so that your child can get the small-group and one-on-one attention needed to ensure a successful experience.

Highly Trained Staff

All staff members are professionally trained intervention specialists, speech, music and art therapists, a drama instructor and college assistants.

MSSLP for TEENS (ages 13-18)In addition to the MSSLP curriculum, our teenagers experience the following:• Shoot the Breeze: Participation in a skill development and social connections group that discusses pertinent topics in a safe and supportive environment • Big Buddy: Pairing with a “little buddy†(MSSLP camper) on Fridays to share lunch and an activity • Camp Trip: A weekly trip to a local camp for swimming, lunch and activities

Tuition

The tuition per child (ages 6 to 12) is $3,000 and per teenager (ages 13 to 18) is $3,050 for this five-week program.

Application Procedure

Please download, complete and submit our MSSLP Application . Once we receive your child’s application, we will call you to set up an intake appointment (at Monarch School) and a school observation (at your child’s school). These appointments are free of charge. Program acceptance will be determined within 2 weeks of your child’s final appointment.

Geauga County's Summer Recreation Program (information taken from the website) The Summer Recreation Program is a five or five week camp that runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for school age children ages 6-22. All Classes will have one group leader and 2-3 assistants with no more than 8 students per class. We average about 51 campers that attend each year. In order to be eligible, they need to have gone through Intake and Eligibility with Community Support Services. We will have a nurse, lifeguard and Music Therapist on staff daily. Every week the campers will experience music, sports, swimming,

arts and crafts and many fun whole camp activities, such as 4th of July picnic, volleyball tournament, Carnival, international food day, scavenger hunts, just to name a few things.

Recreation Unlimited

Recreation Unlimited is located in Ohio (approximately 20 miles north of Columbus). Their mission is to provide sports, recreation and education for youth and adults with physical and or developmental disabilities in a safe, fun and challenging environment. We usually go at the end of August and middle of October, the cost is $45.00. We stay in a cabin, go fishing, swimming, golf, have a dance at night, nature hikes and a variety of other activities. Camping near home:

This is an alternative to Recreation Unlimited for individuals with more medical and fragile situations. This is a good introduction to overnight experiences, and for those who may feel more comfortable staying close to home. Punderson is one place that we may utilize: we go swimming, nature walks, arts and crafts, and cooking. The cost would be $45. There are no set dates for these overnights; we like to go around the holiday season. Overnights:

Overnights vary every year, we get ideas from the clients on where they would like to go and what they would like to see or do. So the vacationers must: 1) Adjust to new environments in a short amount of time 2) Able to provide for their personal self care needs with minimal assistances 3) May have certain medical conditions but they do not impair their safety or welfare during the vacation, 4) Functions well with a 1:4 or 1:5 escort-vacationer ratio. 5) Must attend a 2 to 3 day vacation before going on a trip that requires air transportation or is farther than 5 hours away. Cost is anywhere from $200.00 to $650.00. The lower priced vacations have varied from Niagara Falls, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana, (Basically the surrounding area). The higher priced vacation has included the Disney, Fort Lauderdale, and Myrtle Beach. Dates

vary on when we go to the above places, around April we get some sort of time frame and the various places we will be visiting. We try to group individuals with similar interest, age and compatibility. It is hard to accommodate everyone that signs up; it may take up to two years before everyone gets to go on their vacation. Other options include People and Places and The Guided Tour. Call the Recreation Department for information on the above vacation options. If you have any questions on the above activities please contact the Recreation Department at (440) 729-9406 ext. 1117.

The Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities understands that all individuals have the best opportunity to grow and develop when they are living in a loving family environment. Sometimes families need a little help for this to happen, that’s why the Family Support Services (FSS) Program was developed.

With the help of the Family Support Services Program, families can purchase necessary equipment and services thus easing some financial burdens on the household. More importantly this help can increase the independence of individuals with developmental disabilities. This program is state-funded and is designed to keep family members with developmental disabilities living at home.

What can FSS funds be used for?

FSS can assist with respite care, adaptive equipment, home modifications, dietary supplements, related counseling, training and education to meet the special needs of the individuals with developmental disabilities. Other services that are often considered for reimbursement include, but are not limited to:

Diapers/wipes/car seats for children over three years of age

Prescriptions

Therapeutic toys and supplies

Therapeutic horseback riding

Adaptive swimming

Music/social skills therapy

Eye glasses

Art and dance therapy

Medical identification tags

Hearing aids

A professional referral and preapproval from the the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities is needed if items (with the exception of diapers) exceed $100.00.

Eligibility for Stark DD programsIn order to be eligible to receive services from Stark DD, an individual must provide proof of residency in Stark county and a birth certificate or other proof of age. Evaluations that indicate that the individual has a developmental disability that occurred before the age of 22 is another basic requirement.

Children younger than age three who are at risk for developmental delays are eligible for the Early Intervention component of the Early Childhood Program. Evaluation data must be presented to document delays in one or more of the following: cognition, communication, self-help, social, emotional, and motor skills. Developmental assessments and physicians' referrals are appropriate documentation.

Children ages three to six may be eligible for preschool programs if they are under six years of age on the 30th day of September and have disabilities as defined in the Ohio Department of Early Childhood Education's preschool rules. Eligibility will be based upon a current Multi-Factored Evaluation provided by the child's local school district of residence.

Students ages 6-22 must have evaluation data provided by the school district of residence. All county boards of DD in Ohio establish eligibility through the results of the Children's Ohio Eligibility Determination Instrument or COEDI.

Adults ages 16 and older can enter the Stark DD program in two different ways. Students, ages 16-22, who still receive school services from their local education agency must be referred through the school district's Individual Education Plan (IEP). Adults not referred by a school district must meet the criteria established by the Ohio Eligibility Determination Instrument (OEDI) and must provide documentation that shows the developmental disability occurred before the age of 22.
