We are continuing in our series this year of breaking down the IEP process – January’s session will be looking at Specially- designed instruction in Section 7 of the IEP. Jackie Lawson, M.A.T. [sST3 Consultant] and Angie Chapple-Wang, M.Ed. {SST3 Consultant] will join me in having a conversation about what this section addresses and what it does not. It may be snowy but I will have some comfort snacks and something warm to drink. Don’t miss this imformative workshop and be able to be an active participant in you child’s IEP next spring!

Special Ed Parents Learn about Specially-Designed Instruction

Specially-designed instruction (SDI) refers to the teaching strategies and methods used by teachers to instruct students with different learning styles. To develop appropriate specially-designed instruction for each student, the team works together to analyze student work using evaluation information and any other available data to determine the student's strengths and weaknesses. Based on that student's unique learning needs, strategies are developed. Teachers continue to measure students' progress and make changes in instruction as needed.

Specially-designed instruction must be more individualized, explicit, in-tense, and supportive of the student’s needs. The content, methodology, or delivery of service and instruction has to ensure access to the general education curriculum to meet Ohio’s Educational Standards. Participants will have a better understanding about:

• What specially- designed instruction looks like,

• Roles & responsibilities of individuals providing instruction, and

• The content of the general education curriculum and how to deliver the appropriate methodology to the student.

A FREE hands-on training “What is Specially-Designed Instruction?†will be offered on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 6:30 pm-9:00 pm at the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County – 5811 Canal Road, Valley View, OH 44125. To register, call 216-446-3818 and ask for assistance to walk you through the registration process. Deadline for registration is January 11, 2011.
