Guest guest
Hi, We tried predn. for the firsttime yesterday, and it worked wonders. However, I just came across a post where someone experienced it lowering their child's immune system? Has anyone elsy experienced this? I just am thankful that doesn't usually pick up any other viruses in addition to the . I can't imagine him picking up everything else too!! Does anyone know if any longterm effects? We are planning to try the oredn. for only 2-3 times. So far, we have only noticed that he was a little more hyper than usual, and a bit more emotional. I am though anticipating his next cycle to some sooner (they were every 4 weeks, the last 2 have been every 3), I just hope they don't come sooner than every 3!! Thanks, Olga Caserta Staten Island, NY
Guest guest
Hi, Our experience is that does get sick more often while on Predisone. It could be because of Predison lowering the immune system, or just bad luck, who knows. In the past 2 months he had fever episodes every 2 weeks, and in between he had bronchitis and and a virus which later became an ear infection. In the summer he had a several viruses and ear infections as well, after taking Predisone. Again, this could all be a coincidence, because we've had times when he did not get sick while taking Predisone. Ruthie Mom to 3,
Guest guest
I remember being told by my pediatrician that prednisone suppresses the immune system so children who have an already compromised immune system should not be treated with it unless it is absolutely necessary. I dont know if your child has ever had his immune system tested, but it might be a good idea just to rule out any other underlying conditions. Guest guest
We did have 's immune system tested early on at 15 months or so, and he all came out well. I think its the predisone and some bad luck with all these illnesses we've had.
Guest guest
I had my sons immune system tested as well because he would always seem to get sick with cold symptoms every time he cycled. His immune system was determined to be intact but left no explanation as to why he kept getting sick. The most common virus for him seemed to be croup which is usually treated with prednisone but the dr's did not want to treat him with it due to all the unanswered questions. In my sons case, we just got a diagnosis last week that he has an underlying illness called leukopenia. This affects his white cell counts, so when he cycles his counts drop making him more susceptible to illnesses. I have yet to hear back from his pediatrician as to how they will treat the next case of croup.
Guest guest
Wow, I just read this post and thought maybe that is my answer. My little girl (21/20 was diagnosed with earlier this year. She has a terrible imune system and gets sick after each fever with a sinus, ear, chest or throat infection. We than always have to treat her with antibiotics and she just starts getting better before the next fever. She has been on Prednisone twice for pnemonia and i am wondering if this might be the cause? We ahve had her immune sysytem checked 2 times and everything looks reasonably normal. She was also tested for Neutropinia( which I was sure she had) but she doesn't have it. Does anyone ellse know anything about it lowering the immune system? Guest guest
Hello, I got this info from the following website regarding Orapred (predisone) and weakening the immune system: http://www.drugs.com/mtm/orapred.html Steroid medication can weaken your immune system, making it easier for you to get an infection or worsening an infection you already have or have recently had. Tell your doctor about any illness or infection you have had within the past several weeks. Hope this helps. Ruthie Mom to , 3,
Guest guest
This is interesting. My daughter suffered 3 bouts of Thrush at the age of 13. They were months apart. Her doc said that it only happens in adults that have lowered immune systems. She only takes the pred in a single dose (60mg) during an episode? I think it may just be the entire disease? Anyone?
