Cimetidine - we had a break through fever

So, after four glorious and amazing fever free months being on Cimetidine my son

had an

episode. I was hoping it was just a virus or sinus infection(he had 2 ear

infections earlier in

the month) but for sure it was an episode. Day 2 and 3 were miserable and

completely

uncontrollable and by day 5 poof... all better! I didn't use the Pred because by

the time we

realized it was definitely an episode we were outside the allowable window. It's

been a long

time since we lived through an episode like that and it really shook me up.

Goodness it was

scary!

In those four months fever free my son gained over a pound a month. We're still

continuing

with the Cimetidine hoping it was a stroke of bad luck, but... I'm heart-broken.

I just can't

help guessing if the med stopped working, if it was the stress of me trying to

take away his

paci at night, or who knows what else. My mind is going wild.

I'm so grateful for the break and can only help we have a permanent break real

soon... just

like I hope for all these kids! Just thought I'd update.

We're set to see his Dr in December. Hopefully we'll get some encouraging words.

just to let you know, my daughter was on and off the cimetidine for over a

year and a half, she to still got fevers. ALTHOUGH, they were farther apart

and not predictable. She would go for months at a time without a fever and

all of the sudden , out of nowhere. I gladly excepted that versus every

fourteen days like clockwork. As she is no longer on it, it takes some of

the guess work out of wondering if it is the medicine that is working, or if

she is just having a break. There are so many if " s with p.f.a.p.a Just

for general knowledge, at the time my daughter was taking it, it was dosed

at the highest dosage for childs body weight , taken twice daily. As this

may have changed, check with your doctor.

My daughter has been on cimetidine for almost 2 years. The first year she had 4

episodes (which the doctor told me would happen). Then, she upped the dosage.

And, for the past 7 months, we have been fever free. And, thrilled. My daughter

said, she has never felt better. Her stomach used to bother her a lot and

now...it is so much better. My doctor (rhuematologist) is not pushing for the

T & A as two of her patients with had reacurring fevers after the surgery.

And, since this is working..we are sticking with it.

Hope this helps...I still wait..as I feel like, it is not over (an awful feeling

for a parent).

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Fern and . I'm truly hoping Cimetidine

is our answer

as the T & A isn't a good option for us. I'm glad to know that there's some hope

even with a

break through fever.

Fern, like your daughter my son seems to be much more comfortable on the

medicine. As

he's still a bit young to communicate clearly I can tell by his appetite alone

that he's a

completely different kid. He also told me right before this episode that his

stomach hurt.

That's the first time he's ever said that... though his stomach only seemed to

bother him at

the very beginning and then it stopped as the fever progressed.

Did either of you use Prednisone during their episodes while on Cimetidine? If

so, did that

make them come closer or were they still every few months?

- sounds like your daughter went off Cimetidine. Curious if it's because it

seemed to

stop working or if she seems to be growing out of it.

Vivian,

I never used prednisone. I was too fearful that it would bring the fevers closer

together...and I was not prepared to handle more fevers than necessary. But, I

do have the prescription on hand...should it be her birthday or a special

occassion. My doctor is also not a fan of using, either...unless it is a special

occassion.

I used an alternative method for 2 years which seem to quiet things down..it

didn't make them go away, but it gave us longer breaks. Ironically, the chinese

herbalogist told me that her issues were with her " gut. " And, how ironic...she

is taking cimeditine (a gut related medicine) and it has helped her so much. She

used to have explosive bowel movements and a lot more gas. Now that she is 9

years old, she can tell us everything. And, the main difference is...she does

not have as much stomach issues. My theory with her, is that her issues are in

her stomach...and what it may became irritated, then her whole body would become

inflamed..and shooting right up to her tonsils and hence the high fevers. If her

stomach seems to be calm, then she seems to be fine. Ironically, she came home

this Friday with a canker sore in her mouth and feeling tired and a little

headache..i thought...this is it..here we go again. But, she seemed to fine. She

still has a canker

sore in her mouth (which I am not even sure if it is related) and feels just

fine.

My son has a little fever and cold right now...so, if she does get sick..then I

know it is a virus and not her " thing. "

Hope that answers some of your questions...my doctor says...stick with it. If it

gave him relief (even a couple of months) than, in time...it will work better

(but, you may have to increase the dosage). My daughter takes a lot. Oh, and I

checked with the pharmacist..there really are NO side effects. So, I feel okay

giving it to her.

Hope this helps.

I WAS READING YOUR STORY AND MY SON IS ON CIMETIDINE WHILE HE WAS ON THE DRUG HE

ALSO WAS GIVEN PRESNISDONE BECAUSE HIS FEVERS WOULD NOT BREAK AND HIS FEVER ARE

KNOW COMING EVERY 14 DAYS INSTEAD OF EVERY 28-30 DAYS BUT THAT IS THE ONLY THING

THAT WILL BREAK HIS FEVERS.
