Just saw my name mentioned in the discussions! I use Facilitated Communication

with (aged 13) - and her son Adam showed us how to do it. It

has been fantastic for us and I post regular updates on my facebook. I also use

the Rapid Prompting Method (as taught by Soma from HALO). This is fantastic as

well - I honestly believe that you could put any child with Soma - irrespective

of their 'learning' diagnosis and she would show their intelligence. Soma

believes that all children should be educated in order to find out what they are

good at and so they can live fulfilling lives. Her own son Tito is non verbal

and has written books/poetry. I had sessions with her last year and again a

couple of weeks ago and was able to observe her with other children who had

never done this before. One father sticks in my mind - Soma had just done some

maths with his non-verbal son - he was breathless- almost papiltating ..x can

do maths he was saying ...and we never knew!! Over the last year I have been

using RPM to teach Biology, Physics and Poetry at GCSE level(we have

tried Maths but feel he is too advanced for us!). If you were to see

he presents as a severely autistic child - he is non-verbal, has obsessions ,

tantrums often appears to not understand (but we now know that cognitively he

does understand - problem is getting his body to respond). So RPM involves

working on pointing skills- using prompts to help child initiate responses,

giving choices of answers, - and all you need to begin with is pencil and paper.

I feel very passionate about this and have been thinking for some time about

putting on a practical workshop for other parents to show what we have done with

. I cannot pretend to be an expert but would love to share what I

have learnt so far. If anyone is interested please email me so I can guage very

rough numbers. Sue X

PS Annette - great to see your post - glad your son did well!!

though if the non verbal who do communicate through these methods are less

learning disabled, there must be variations in that among the non verbal

severe's. Wonder if County would pay for a visit to Soma lol.
