Healing mental illness with reiki therapy Learn how Reiki therapy is used with traditional psychotherapy to treat mental illnesses. Reiki has gradually become more accepted and prevalent in the medical community. Its effectiveness as a complementary mode of therapy for cancer and surgery patients has been proven in hospitals and hospice settings. Now Reiki is gaining support for use in healing mental illnesses, as a complement to traditional psychotherapy. Reiki is a kind of healing performed by a Reiki practitioner or Reiki master. The practice originated in Japan centuries ago; its name derives from the Japanese words for “rei” meaning energy source and “ki’ meaning energy movement in the body. As its name implies, Reiki brings healing by channeling energy from the practitioner to the client. During the session, the client remains

fully clothed while the practitioner centers her hands over certain energy centers. It can bring balance, both physically and spiritually, to the client. Clients emerge from a session feeling relaxed and less stressed. Clients often experience an emotional release after Reiki treatment. It can bring emotional and spiritual feelings to the surface, often ones that have been

suppressed for years. Because of this emotional connection, Reiki can be used in conjunction with counseling to provide a relaxed, safe environment in which a client can open up and explore emotional issues. A trained counselor or psychotherapist can then use her training to assist the client in exploring, assessing, and overcoming emotional or behavioral issues. As a result, many licensed therapists

and counselors are seeking Reiki training. Psychotherapeutic Reiki practitioners Dr. Curtin and Judith Prebluda explain that Reiki works in healing mental illness because psychological health, like physical health, comes from the unimpeded flow of energy.

When humans experience emotional or traumatic events, they process and clear the negative effects of events in order to progress and grow from the experience. If a person is unable to process the negative energy resulting from trauma, the negative energy acts as an obstacle to the flow of energy. During psychotherapeutic Reiki treatments, the practitioner will evaluate the client’s psychological state and perform an energy evaluation. Curtin and Prebluda then try to determine the client’s “presenting problem” and identify from which fields of energy it derives, whether physical, emotional, mental, interpersonal, or spiritual. Once the energy imbalance and presenting problem have been identified, they begin treatment by focusing Reiki body work on those specific energy fields. Restoring the flow of positive energy can be especially beneficial to patients with depression or anxiety, since symptoms of both conditions include negative feelings, lack of interest,

and fear or anxiety about current or future situations. After a Reiki session, they work with the client using traditional psychotherapy methods such as emotional release work, cognitive restructuring, problem solving, or imagery. Just as Reiki therapy can be used to alleviate a cancer or surgery patient’s pain, it can help alleviate symptoms of mental illness. Reiki can be a useful tool in treating mental illness; however, many experts warn that Reiki alone cannot bring long-term relief from mental illnesses. Practitioners should always advise a client with mental illness to seek the assistance of a trained counselor or therapist for further in-depth treatment. http://www.essortment.com/lifestyle/reikitherapyhe_sojc.htm
