Guest guest
Yes but not in eo form that I've seen, from the suppliers in the suppliers section of the group. The cocoa absolute from Eden Botanicals is $26 an ounce. ----- I've only ever seen the fragrance oil for " chocolate " , but never the eo or absolute, so thank you! I'll check it out. -

(I've ordered the absolute from both Eden and White Lotus, and there's no discernable scent difference to my newbie-ish nose.) The absolute does make for some **serious** deliciousness. I've made several people's eyes go very very wide when I let them sniff it. The CO2 seems to be newish and I just ordered some. It's also SOLID, looks like cocoa butter. Anyone else worked with cocoa CO2? Is it time to break out the double boiler and dental tools or is there some other mysterious secret to working with it? Guest guest
Doesn't Cacao need a emulsifier ? I have just looked into the files and cannot find much on the topic. (perhaps I did not search long enough) In the past I have purchased vanilla and some others that did not break down in alcohol. I see on White Lotus that they now warn you about those that do need emulsifier. Can anyone offer more info on this topic? Katlyn

And yep, it looks like cocoa butter, smells like cocoa butter, and when I put some on the back of my hand, it melted just like cocoa butter. If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck.....????? I've never actually used it for anything. Bought it out of curiosity really. But I'm sure if you heat it gently, it will liquify quite readily like it did on the back of my hand. Wonder if it will be soluble in alcohol or just in oil? Patty

I do OIL-based perfumes; I don't like alcohol. I purchased a bottle of very rich-smelling Cocoa Absolute from Eden Botanicals and was assurred by Barbara that it should blend well with Fractionated Coconut Oil. Nuh-uh. It sits there like oil in the clearer Coconut. Since then, I've tried Grapeseed Oil, Jojoba Oil (which is a wax), and a few others, and nothing seems to blend with the Cocoa Abs. Even gently warming them and swirling them together does not get them to blend. Any ideas on how to overcome this problem? Greyson

I do OIL-based perfumes; I don't like alcohol. Ditto. And I spent a bit of time tearing my hair out over it, but then I did as suggested somewhere in the archives, blended it (and at a low percentage!) in a double boiler. Did it completely blend? Did it appear to blend even a smidge? God no. I stuck it in a corner and ignored it for a month. Then I randomly pulled it out and noticed that the top 98% of the bottle (the sweet almond oil) has been perfumed in a lovely manner by the absolute. (The abs is still sitting at the bottom unblended, but the carrier oil is now gorgeous.) I haven't done any blending with it yet, mostly just pulled it out to sniff & let other people's eyes go WIDE with it. and I don't know how strong it'd be mixed with other oils yet. Being that it'd technically be a 2% dilution, if it'd diluted, I had a vague thought of making it a bath oil. It might work well for adding a light chocolate note to a blend... or a strong one. No clue yet. This stuff smells so edible I've had to take it away from my foodie friends for their own safety. I've had thoughts of trying to do a kind of double infusion to try and make it stronger - to pour off the good stuff that I have and try to double boil it again with another dose of the abs to see if it'd make a stronger chocolate, for blending. I haven't a clue if it'd work, but it seems logical. > I purchased a bottle of very rich-smelling Cocoa Absolute from Eden > Botanicals and was assurred by Barbara that it should blend well with > Fractionated Coconut Oil. I'd bet a bundle on a mis-communication -- 'cause it says right there on the site that it " does not blend with fixed oils. Then again, I've used few commercial products with cocoa butter where I *like* the scent - usually it seems overwhelming and over-sweet to me. This smelled more mild in the bottle, maybe even leaning to the white chocolate side of the force. As for the dissolving, I bought it with the hopes it would dissolve in oil. It looks like it will. As soon as it becomes cool enough out that I can *stand* the idea of cooking and touching hot bottles. I don't work in alcohol so I can't comment on that though. Thanks for the sanity check on what to DO with it. Karoline

Guest guest
Speaking of Cocoa Absolute, does anyone know it's shelf life? That's a hell of an offer Butch has just made, (THANK YOU!) but I'd hate to get several ounces when I've no clue how long it'd keep for when I have a good bit of it right now. I figure it's somewhere between the shelf life of Sandalwood and Citrus, but where exactly, I don't know. Thanks again! Karoline

That way you can have an oil based perfume. I know it's not the same as a liquid, but it's the best way to emulsify cocoa Abs in an oil base using beeswax. BTW, I just got a sample of that cocoa abs from Eden and it knocked my socks off! Don't give up! Maggie

" > (http://www.edenbotanicals.com/essentials2.html#cocoa) About 10 days ago I received a sample of Cocoa Abs. but except sniffing the bottle (and of course letting some friends sniff it too) I didn't do much with it because it is really very very hot here for soapmaking right now. But after reading all your remarks I got a little stressed. So I took some jojoba oil and pourred a little Cocoa in it. At the beginning it is like a mass in the jojoba that doesn't disperse. But after shaking the jar it blended very well. The jojoba turned darker and after some times i returned to look at the jar and there were no deposit at the bottom. Does this mean that Cocoa abs blend well with jojoba or that my absolute is not of a good quality? Bella from Tel Aviv

Some absolutes are like that, and vanilla oleoresin performs that way, too. I can tell you that it will not fully incorporate into anything without an emulsifier. In a solid it will bead or eventually drop to the bottom, but, I have successfully blended it in lotions which will turn your lotion a chocolate milk color if you don't mind (I never did) but it's heavenly. I have an amazing soap right now with a blend of Eden Botanicals amber resins, cocoa absolute, guiaicwood, amyris and a bit of jasmine sambac absolute and it looks like dark rich chocolate! Yum. If you want it for perfumes the best choice is to infuse it your blend with regular gentle mixing and then let it age age age. The longer the better, but the scent does transfer. I make a very popular perfume with Cocoa Absolute but it takes plenty of time to age. aka Trace My Skin Soap Studio www.myskinsoapstudio.com
