Reason I stopped using this in about 1984 as did most other experts. In LA at MLK it was often given with the instruction to bite it or take with a glass of water in ER.In UCLA and Beverly Hills they use Perrier. Or at least we used to joke.JNC has advised against its use as well since about this time as I recall. But most Drs have not read any JNCs since medical school as everyone knows how to treat HTN as it is "so easy" and one can do it. Which anyone can do a good job at HTN if they read and follow the guidelines. If you note in the last guidelines (JNC 7) the last step is when 3 drugs are required and not at goal : REFER TO A HYPERTENSION SPECIALIST. If there is a local Board Certified Specialist they can be found at the American Society of HTN web site.
