Carol Toxic honey hits NZ By New Zealand correspondent Kerri RitchieMarch 25, 2008 - 10:13AMSource: ABC Beekeepers in New Zealand are in damage control after nine people were poisoned by contaminated honey over the Easter weekend. Toxic honey is produced when bees feed on honeydew on tutu bushes, but the last reported case was in 1974. One teaspoon can seriously harm the human nervous system. Nine people got sick when they bought contaminated comb honey from a surf town in the Coromandel in New Zealand's North Island. Beekeepers' Association CEO Jim says most beekeepers know not to collect honey from high-risk areas in autumn. "After a dry summer the bees start collecting this honeydew which they see as a wee bonanza," he said. Nine packets of the toxic honey are still unaccounted for.
