Q & A: Inviting Toads

Question: I understand that toads eat lots of garden pests, including slugs. How does one go about getting toads in the garden? Do I buy them? Answer: I am not aware of a commercial source for purchasing toads. Toads tend to appear in a garden all on their own if conditions are right. Toads seem to enjoy areas where there are fallen leaves and damp mulch in which they may shelter, soft soil into which they may burrow, and possibly overturned clay flower pots or little stone hideways in a cool, shady area. They also need a source of water. Toads are territorial and long-lived, so a toad will stay in your garden for an extended period of time. In a way, I suppose you could say toads like conditions quite similar to those enjoyed by slugs! Avoid pesticide sprays as much as possible, because toads are especially sensitive to them. Q & A: Timing of Wisteria Pruning

Question: Why did my established wisteria put out very few flowers last year, when previous years it was full of blossoms? Any thoughts? Answer: Wisteria set blooms in late summer for the next year's spring display. If you pruned during that time you may have inadvertantly removed many of the developing flower buds. Also, excessive vigor from over-fertilizing and watering may have caused growth of foliage at the expense of blooms. Wisteria need a lot of sun to set flower buds, so if increased growth of surrounding vegetation has shaded the plant, it's time to prune companion plants! Tip: Cage Tomatoes

Vigorous tomato varieties need to be supported to keep plants and fruit off the ground. For the simplest support construct a 6-foot-high, 3-foot-diameter cylindrical wire cage around the plants and anchor it to the ground. Comment on this Story | Printer Friendly | Send Story to a Friend | Top
